Hydroboost / Power Steering cooler line routing

Below is the hydroboost line routing that I found - where in this line routing would I stick a cooler? Thinking of the below stacked plate cooler.

Only the "red" colored lines need to be premade with crimped ends while the others can be standard AN fitting lines ?

what are thoughts on a filter assembly like this ? Is it needed ?

I have a power steering cooler on 2 vehicles (one with hydroboost and one without). I have the cooler between the steering gear and power steering reservoir (the return), which is low pressure.

I have a similar set-up to yours but with a rack and pinion instead of the box. I can grab the lines even after driving on city streets for quite a while.

What is the need for a cooler?

not sure the cooler is needed just thought about including it ahead of time. Also the filter since there is no filter that I know of

I use a PSC fluid reservoir. It has a filter built in the bottom.

Cooler would go in the return, no need to add a filter and over complicate the system. Some 01-13? trucks have a PS cooler that fits on the core support. Is it needed, not really unless you're racing the truck, can it hurt, no, just another connection point to leak and item to fit under the hood. Braided -6 for example is usually rated about 1000PSI, that right at the edges of what a PS pump is capable of, and some exceede that. A braided hydraulic hose could be built and match the rest of the system pretty easily though.

What is the pressure on the low side ( or green hoses above ) ?

I have a remote canister from CVF ( came with the PS pump and pulley setup, I'll check to see if it has a built in filter.

If you go with using a cooler, I second the above. I am using a heat sink with hydroboost.

Motortrend says return side pressures are usually around 100 psi, but when the system is cold, it can spike to more than 200 psi for a few moments.

I think this all depends on the pressure your power steering pump is putting out.

When I did the hydro boost in my Mustang I used teflon -6 SS line on the pressure side and standard -6 SS on the return side. The PS tank had a filter to take out "micro" bubbles. That was per the folks at Hydratech. Worked great. See pic.

Definitely between the gear and the return on the pump. The cooler is pretty important for me, if you’ve ever had a hydraboost truck with big tires in a situation like backing a trailer in a tight spot during peak summer heat, or even off roading where you aren’t going fast and are turning the wheels a lot, power steering fade is a very real thing when the fluid gets hot. Remember if the steering fades so does the brake assist in this application. I’ve had both of the above situations happen on my ‘98 silverado with 35’s under it. Obviously not everyone is dealing with big tires or these other situations but my point is when the fluid gets hot things don’t work anywhere near the same, and we are talking about brake assist…

Here is a routing diagram with the reservoir in the pump. The pump is an LSx style pump with 2 returns. I don't remember who posted it or I would give them credit.....

Believe the recommended location with hydroboost is as 57taskforce indicated. That would be the blue line in LockDock's image. Using a newer pump on my LSA with remote reservoir and dual returns in my case and my cooler is getting installed in the steering box return line to the PSC reservoir. Remote reservoir feed to pump should always be downhill.

To add to the confusion - went out and assembled the remote canister from CVF - its only has two ports.......... the diagram I posted earlier shows three ports on the canister. Am I missing something or do I need another style remote reservoir ?

I got it out an Astro van from Pick and Pull several years ago.

It is cold and raining here.
I will try to locate it this week maybe?
It had a tee in the lines.

Yes, you need to add another return port. I mentioned the PSC canister because they have one with 2 return ports. Some people T the return from the hydro and steering box together, but that is not recommended.

I would like to know also why the tee is not recommended.
Because the vehicle I took my system off of., was leaking all around the tee fittings.

As long as the return is sized appropriately and the tee is not a restriction I see zero reason it would cause issues. Much like the return in a fuel system, you want it sized big enough so there's no restriction which causes unneccisary pressure.

Might be best to go with a 8AN line size on those two hoses vs the 6AN - that should ease any restrictions I would believe

You can run a tee. GM did on the early hydraboost trucks. I’ve got one on my 72 K20 that uses the oe ‘72 pump with one single return. Make sure it’s a full flow and you’ll be fine.

Under certain conditions, the pressure from the return on the pump can push up back to the hydroboost unit and cause the pedal to not return. This usually also caused the pump to start squealing.

If you do put in a T, make sure the straight through portion of the T is coming from the steering box and the T side is coming from the hydroboost. This will help.
