Doing away with engine harness connector
I'm fed up with trying to restore the brittle engine harness on my 66, and need to add a couple wires anyway.
I cut the original grommet and pushed the female harness back into the cab. There is enough wire length to crimp on spade lugs, to mate with lugs on the new engine wiring. I'm thinking of tacking a big washer with a 5/8 hole behind the original connector hole, fit a grommet, and pull the new wire through, with enough tape to seal. Anyone have a better idea? |

Re: Doing away with engine harness connector
You can get a replacement for the old brittle connector from AAW --> https://www.americanautowire.com/sho...tor-kit-6-wire
That one will accept up to 6 wires like the original and comes with a new grommet. If you need room for a couple more, they also make an 8 wire version --> https://www.americanautowire.com/sho...tor-kit-8-wire Looks like that one will require enlarging the hole a little bit though. Keeping a plug at that location (versus running the wires through a grommet) will make things a bit easier if you ever have to take the engine harness back out for any future repair work. |

Re: Doing away with engine harness connector
I started to re-wire my truck using what was left of the original stuff, but quickly threw in that towel and bought new harnesses from American Autowire. All new, the main under dash includes a new fusebox, everything is well done. They even offer modified harnesses for some parts. One of my engine compartment harnesses is modified to use an internal regulated alternator on the passenger side, and the other is pre-built for HEI. Good stuff.

Re: Doing away with engine harness connector
I left both halves of the old connector in place, but I hollowed it out to just the plastic housings. Then, I went into my cab and securely tapped and heat shrank new wires of matching guage and color to the o.em wires. Next, I pushed them thru the hollowed out connector and terminated them under the hood where they went before.

Re: Doing away with engine harness connector
Measure the hole, buy a grommet to fit with a no hole center. Cut a hole in the grommet to the size you need to fit all the wires you need to go through. Just did this myself and my cruise control cable passes through as well.
