72 c10 trans shifting

Anyone on here running a 383 stroker TCI street fighter trans with 2600 stall? My 1st to 2nd shifts so hard it chirps the rear tires. Do you think my TV cable is to tight or is that the nature of the beast.

1969 C10 (not the current one) that I bought in the early 1980s. Paid $1200; sold for $1500 a few years later. Just a hint at the appreciation that was coming.
Retired as a factory automation products salesman.
Worked part-time over the years for an engine builder and a classic car repair shop.
Member here for 24 years! This is the very first car/truck Internet forum I joined. I still used a dial-up modem back then!

Too tight a cable leads to late hard shifts. Is that what you are experiencing? Proper adjustment of the cable is critical, especially on the 200 and 700 transmissions. Too loose, your trans would be toast soon. Which trans do you have? I always liked the chirped tires on the 1-2 shift, back in the day. A 2-3 chirp was a bonus.

Not likely the TV cable adjustment will help.
Very likely they installed either the Corvette Servo or a Billet Servo and/or bypassed the accumulator. Easy enough to change out the Servo, as it doesn't require pulling the pan.
If you have the Corvette Servo go to the stock one and if it's a Billet go to the Corvette Servo. Pictures of each style are available on the internet.

What many people don't understand is shift quality is very much affected by the differential gear ratio, the weight of the car and the stall of the torque converter. This is all taken into account by the OEM's. Once you change things their is not much control over shift quality/firmness.

If you are not comfortable with this work most local shops will change this out for you. It's a 30 min job, maybe less? Consider if you mess with it any warranty you had will typically be null.

I know the OP said "TV cable", but I've heard detent cables referred to as TV cables, and vice versa.

If it's a TH350, I've seen a cheap B&M Shift Improver kit cause harsh 1-2 shifts even at light throttle. I removed that sucker and have used nothing but TransGo kits since.

Probably 90% of us want firm shifts, but not harsh, u-joint killing shifts.

Neither B&M nor TCI would be on my transmissions parts shopping list.

It's a feature, not a bug.

But I'd go to a transmission shop and get the cable checked anyway, always a good idea.

A detent cable only affects down-shaft timing. Nothing else. The transmissions with a detent cable can be operated without them even hooked up.
They work just a THM 400ls. However, 400's detent is electrically operated. It too can be left disconnected. All of the GM transmissions with a detent cable have governors and Vacuum modulators that control the shift points.

A Throttle Valve (TV) is different. The have an effect on shift timing and shift firmness. Inside the transmission they move the TV valve. This isn't the on/off style a detent cable uses. The TV valve replaces the Vacuum modulator in the transmissions they are used on. A TV cable can't be left disconnected as you will have a 100% chance of burning up the transmission.

Yes, on the street they are sometimes used interchangeably. IMHO their is enough functional difference one should call it what they are to avoid transmission issues.
