1971 GMC paint code

Hello all, I am redoing a 1971 GMC K15 Stepside 4x4 pickup. I am trying to figure out how to get the correct paint code. The SPID says the original color was Medium Bronze, option no. 1522AA. The local auto paint store says they can't use that. Can anyone give a code that would match a current brand of paint? Thanks in advance. Joe

Re: 1971 GMC paint code

522 is Copper Poly on a Chevy, so maybe GMC called it something else? Ignore the other characters.

Re: 1971 GMC paint code

Hi Jack….nice truck. I had a similar question a couple of weeks ago with a different colour but remembered where I got the info. I found your code 522 (medium bronze iridescent) has a R-M code A which is A-2257D and an R-M code E which is E-2257D.
Hope this helps.

GMC and Chevy used the same codes. The only differences in paint between the two was some colors offered for one and not the other. Yet... I have seen exception to that standard. You could order a Chevy-only color on a GMC.

522/Medium Bronze Poly was a Chevy-only color. PPG called it Copper Poly, but you go by the code not the name.

I use www.autocolorlibrary.com for paint reference

EDIT: RM calls it "Iridescent"? That is strange, because it isn't iridescent, it's metallic. GM used the term "poly" to denote metallic colors. Iridescent means color changes at different angles, like mother of pearl, soap bubbles, oil slicks, etc. The only paint I know with that characteristic is mica paints. Pearls change "shade" at different angles. You would think a paint company would know the proper terms

Re: 1971 GMC paint code

They must not mix much paint for old Vehicles if they couldn’t use the number .

Re: 1971 GMC paint code

I don't know what paint they use, but PPG could take care of them for sure. Maybe they could crossover PPGs code to their brand if nothing else.

Re: 1971 GMC paint code

If he gave them the complete set of characters, usually paint ending in "AA" is custom, like fleet colors, right? Or not? It kind of threw me for a minute, looking at the SPID, but all the other options had the "AA" at the end, so I figured that they were throw-away characters from a particular assembly division.
