Ignition key door key

My 72 c10 came without keys.

Are the ignition key and the door key the same?

Re: Ignition key door key

Negative.
Two separate keys.
The ignition is a rectangular shaped key, and the door locks are more.....”round”
And they are “keyed” differently.

What year did the keys become different? (My ‘67 GMC uses one key.)

Same thing with my '69. It has never had 2 keys. Just the rectangular head version. I always thought they should have had separate keys for ignition and doors.

Re: Ignition key door key

I know originally the early ones did use the same keys. Not sure if or when they changed to 2 different keys in the 67-72s. Check with lockdoc on the board here, he will probably know.

You would be wrong.

All '67 - '72 Chevy and GMC trucks came from the factory with the same key for doors and ignition. If you have a truck with different keys for the doors and ignition then someone has changed one or more of the locks, usually the ignition. '73 was the changeover year for 2 keys....

They should be the same if none of the locks have been replaced.

The first thing I would do is to pull the passengers door lock out and see if there is a code number stamped into it. If there is take it to a locksmith and have him cut you a key. If the locks are all original the key will fit the ignition. If you don't have a locksmith close PM me the code number and I will cut you a key and send it to you for 8 bucks. If there is no code number on it, the door lock can still be disassembled and de-coded to cut a key. The destructive methods (drilling, sawzall, etc)would be a last resort for me.

Picture shows the location of the code number.

Right on.
Good to know.
Obviously mine have had the door locks, or ignition changed, over the years.

Thanks for the vote of confidence.. ... I think it is only because I am on here a lot and do a lot of reading. Yes, I have built a few trucks, but this site is where I got most of my information too. There have been a LOT of knowledgeable people before me. I just like to try and spread it around.

If you are comfortable carrying two keys there is nothing wrong with that. If you ever decide to convert to one key this is a good solution:

https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Class...GM,116526.html

Not the cheapest aftermarket set, but it is the best aftermarket set. Made in Mexico, it is the closest to NOS or OEM you can get.

My next question is weather the lock blank/ plug is standard or normal on the passenger side door?

I'm gonna say no. I have never seen that before, only the same type lock as on the driver's door.

Hey Mike -- I've never seen that on a '67-'72. Is it on a Panel Truck perhaps?

I saw a thread about how a '63 C/10 had a 3-way passenger side door handle -- Lock/Neutral/Unlock -- but in '67 GM changed trucks to be unlockable if you pushed the button down, held the release in and closed to door to lock, like the passenger cars. The button would just pop up again.
If a turnip farmer came to town, and left the keys in the ignition, and locked the door, how would he get back in?
I call it the Turnip Truck Anti Lockout Feature.

What year and type of truck is your photo from?

I would say that is just a snap in plug that happend to fit.

Here is a picture of an original GM blank door lock cylinder. I removed this one from a C50 truck over at my local salvage yard. It is made just like a keyed door lock cylinder except it has a blank cover. I have only seen one other one and it was on the for sale board on here.

And BTW…my original keys are octagonal - my copies are rectangular.

Yes, that would be all '67 and early '68 only. The octagon head key blanks are harder to find than the rectangular head blanks.

Here is a picture of the 3 different octagon keys. If anyone is looking for blanks for their truck you need to make sure you get the correct one.

The one on the left will only fit the 1935 - '66 trucks. (no stamp) The center one is for the 1967 trucks ("A" stamp), and the right one is for the '68 trucks "C" stamp). Some of the early '68 trucks may have used the "A" key blank. I have not tried to verify that though. This information mostly applies to original GM key blanks.

So, is there a code on the driver's side door lock. Since that's the only door lock I have?

Some door locks have a code number and some don't. You will just have to take it out and see..... I always mention the passengers side because That is the one I always remove first to check. Be sure and spray some penetrating oil on the spring clip inside the door so it will slide off easier. And wear some gloves, it can be a knuckle buster when you remove it.

Re: Ignition key door key

not here to argue with the apparent guru of keys and locks, but if the expert says they all came with ONE key and not two, then why do all the aftermarket suppliers say otherwise - one square key for the ignition "code C" and the other for the doors - a round key with "code D"?

My darn near original, unmolested '72 C10 has two keys - no reason to suggest any of the locks/ignition would have been swapped out. I don't have the OEM keys, so I went with Classic Industries and got the OEM looking keys, however the door key does not match the pattern to even fit. the key for the door lacks the longest groove at the top most portion of the key (bottom picture - right side), thus I am not certain which key would actually work. Based on visual comparison of "GM keys" online it seems that "code B" is the correct one for my doors.

(LEFT - old working key: RIGHT - new not working key)

"All" is a pretty strong word, and "all" of them don't say that. The below suppliers list 67-72 truck sets with one key for all locks and I didn't check half of the ones that came up in my search. Some of the aftermarket suppliers don't know, or could care less what is original or correct for a certain year of truck. The 1973 & up truck lock sets are the ones that use two different keys. None of this applies to autos of the same era as some of them used the two key system.

https://aapd.net/lock-kit-67-72-284-chevy-pickup-67-72

Here is a key chart that lists all of the key blanks used for the '67-'72 GM trucks.

https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=246485

You will notice there are no "B", "D", or "K" key blanks listed for '67-'72 GM trucks. That is because they are the secondary keys used for door locks on '73 up trucks.

Your '72 would have came from the factory with all of the locks keyed to the "C" keyway and used the same key for all locks..... If your '72 GM truck uses two different keys then one or more of your locks have been changed at some point in it's life.

Say what? The ignition and locks take the same key from factory.
