Vent window shaft sheared off
Hi all,
I'm trying to rebuild my vent windows with new seals. The driver side window has always been a bear to open and close, requiring two hands just to do it. I got it apart and found the shaft sheared right at the vent window frame. I'm tempted to have a go at repairing it myself, but I'm sure what metal the vent window frame is. It is the bright finish, so stainless or chrome, but I'm unsure which. I'm also unsure of how it was original held together, since the shaft is regular steel. Can anyone shed some light on how these were made, what they are made of, and if/how they repaired there own? Thanks!

Re: Vent window shaft sheared off
Place a want to buy ad in the parts section , it will be way easier and faster to replace than repair , you'll still have to pull the glass , It looks like soft ray tint . To repair I'd pull the glass from the frame and tig weld it . It will discolor the chrome but should function fine as long as it's aligned correctly.

I may have one in similar condition that you can have for the shipping from PDX. Let me know I will take a look.

Re: Vent window shaft sheared off
FYI the frame is chrome, not stainless.

Re: Vent window shaft sheared off
Thanks for all the replies!
Thought it was chrome based on magnet test. Good to confirm. I'm going to the Portland swap meet Friday, so I'll either pickup one from there or from HO455. I haven't done much tig welding, so I would probably make a mess of it anyway. At least the glass is easy to remove, I noticed it wasn't in the frame correctly while driving and was surprised when it simply popped out. Been like that six years.

If you don't find anything at the Portland Sway meet. *(Unlikely I know)
I had my vents restored by this guy. A fellow Oregonian. Couldn't have been happier with the results. Jerry Kassis Dr J’s Restoration Rx 37263 Deer Lane Lebanon, OR 97355 541-405-8286 Email: drjsrestorx@comcast.net |

Re: Vent window shaft sheared off
even a good TIG welder may have trouble getting a good weld without blowing through the frame part
Find a used or buy a repop one |
