First Road Trip in the '89 K1500

I'm about to hit the road for a place near Green River, UT where we go ride motorcycles a couple times a year. Packed up the truck last night including a set of '67 buddy bucket seats I'm swapping with another forum member. The drive is about 750 miles and takes around 13 hours. I'm leaving a day earlier than I had planned in order to avoid snow in the mountains. Hopefully the truck does alright!

Crazy amounts of snow in the mountains this year.

Getting gas in Fernley, NV. It's always a relief here from high CA prices.

Thank you!

Got 11.0 MPG crossing the Sierras. Just got gas again in Elko, NV and got 19.55 MPG with a tailwind.

Re: First Road Trip in the '89 K1500

Arrived at the campsite at a little after 1:00am after stopping for a few hours for a brief visit with family along the way. The truck had no issues other than a strange thing where the steering binds up slightly for a moment occasionally after making a left turn. Slightly unsettling. It happened a handful of times early in the day, and then no more after that. This same thing was happening a few months ago before I replaced the steering gearbox, PS pump and steering column. I'm thinking it must be in the ball joints or tie rod ends.

Here's my gas mileage so far:

Odo gal MPG
307123 10.526 11.02
307395 13.912 19.55
307645 14.013 17.84
307797 9.788 15.53

Re: First Road Trip in the '89 K1500

There is a natural gas well being drilled next to the main road into the area where we were camping. On Friday we got word that there was an explosion at the well and that it is leaking. The road is closed now, and the hundreds of people camping in the area are stranded. I ended up driving my truck to the far end of the main road where it ends at a sandy wash. I was able to get through the wash to access a rough two-track road on the other side that loops around to another road that exits the area. Took me about two hours to get out of the park instead of half an hour if I had been able to go the normal way. Below is a photo that shows the cloud of gas from the leaking well.

Made it back home last night. The truck did great. Put about 1500 miles on it.
