Re: 2001 Chevrolet silverado 2500, 6.0, 4x4 Short Bed

I have a 2005 K2500HD Ext cab 6' bed with the LQ4 6.0L, 4L80E, NV263, 4.11 gears, and 265/75AT17 tires.
I get 11-12 mpg local and 13-14 mpg highway.

Slightly better MPG than my 1975 K20 with a 350 (5.7L) with a Quadrajet on an Edelbrock Performer intake, Jacobs Ignition, TH700R4, NP208, 3.73 gears, and 265/75R16 tires that typically got 10-11 around home and 12-13 highway. The LQ4 has a whole lot more get up and go than the 350 did.

The LQ4 in my T800 K2500 is a 366 CI (6.0L) engine with shorter rear gears.
The LQ4 has power on par or better than an LE8 454 (7.4L) truck engine without guzzling fuel like that beast.

LQ4 366 is 330hp and 370ft-lbs
LE8 454 is 230hp and 360ft-lbs

That looks like a nice machine.
Look over the transfer case for a leaking tail section. The oil pump eats holes in the case.

Thanks for your info on yours...very help full... Do you thing that 2001 is the LQ4 366 is 330hp and 370ft-lbs ?

He's got the factory aluminum rims on it now, not in picture

Im looking for another truck at a good low price, I take care of my trucks so want something taken care of.

The guy has a $8000 price on it , 198k miles, I would make a low ball cash offer.

Id like to get another Cummins diesel 4x4 but everyone around here thinks their old neglected, junker, muddy, never washed, high milage, diesel truck, POS is Gold $$$$$ ... Ha Ha

Re: 2001 Chevrolet silverado 2500, 6.0, 4x4 Short Bed

2001 366 (6.0L) is an LQ4. GM didn't change much about that engine between 2001 & 2007.
The LQ9 wasn't available til 2002 and I'm fairly sure it wasn't an option in the pickup trucks, just the SUVs.

Good luck on your unicorn hunt. A 1990's Cummins Dodge for that matter a newer one that's not rode hard and put away wet is difficult to find.

There are plenty of late 90s early 2000 dodge cummins trucks around here. Most are junkers , most people dont take care of there trucks or even wash them. but they think its gold . Many ads for parting out complete trucks because they are idiots, duh

Im starting to study up on these newer/ older chevys. I know they have dash instrument cluster issues.

Re: 2001 Chevrolet silverado 2500, 6.0, 4x4 Short Bed

Yeah. Don't lowball me. I know what I have. LOL

The instrument panels are fairly easy to repair if you have the gear and some experience.
I wouldn't recommend a DIY if you don't have a experience with a decent desoldering station, a good temp controlled soldering station, and a usable rework microscope. I picked up my soldering gear relatively cheaply at one of the last few Hamvention flea markets at the Hara Arena. I miss those.
My Hakko 472D has the gun rather than the wand hand piece and I was only into it for $250 unused in the original box. You can find the Hakko 472 and the 471 on the used market now.
I have a Weller WD1 with the WXMP iron. I picked them up cheap and I was still over $300 all told. I really really like the Weller RT tips but if I was buying a station now I'd look into the $80-$100 OLED stations that use the HAKKO T12 tips. The Chinese tips are not as good as the real HAKKO tips. Get a feel for the iron with an assortment of Chinese tips then buy the HAKKO tips you want to use often.
You can find serviceable HDMI microscopes for $100-$200. They're nowhere near as easy to use as the Amscope binocular rework microscopes but they are also nowhere near the price. My Amscope was near a grand in 2002.

***Word of advice. The cluster PC boards are fairly thin. Be careful with the heat. It's easy to delaminate the copper traces on a thin board if you heat the connection too long.

I touched up the solder joints on the SMT resistors, replaced the stepper motors, and replaced the illumination lamps in my stepsisters' truck. Mine haven't given me any problems but I won't say that too loudly.
Most of the radio and HVAC control head lamps were burnt out in my truck. I replaced them with new tungsten filament bulbs.

Lots of folks install LED lamps. I didn't go that direction. I don't like the illumination hot spots that LED bulbs tend to make and color matching the rest of the instrument panel illumination is difficult. The Tungsten filament bulbs lasted from 2004 to 2021 in my stepsister's truck. Replacements will outlast most folks ownership.
I re-used the blue silicone caps since the replacements didn't come with them.

Re: 2001 Chevrolet silverado 2500, 6.0, 4x4 Short Bed

Hatzie,

Is there a way to identify the axle gear ratio, and if it has a locker/posi-traction rear axle ?

Would that info be on the a spec sheet sticker in the glove box or somewhere on this 2001 chevy 2500

Thanks

Re: 2001 Chevrolet silverado 2500, 6.0, 4x4 Short Bed

Looks like the glove box sticker has RPO codes

G80 = posi,
G84 =4.10 ratio,
GS3= 3.73 ratio

Re: 2001 Chevrolet silverado 2500, 6.0, 4x4 Short Bed

G80 is positrac or locker depending on the model year.
Your gear ratio you're looking for something like GT4.

There are several sites that claim to be able to decode the RPO codes.

If you take a picture of your SPID and post it we can probably answer most questions about options on the truck. If you're worried about posting the VIN just put a piece of tape over the VIN number or edit the VIN number out of the picture.

If you want a full options list for the truck you can probably get one by politely asking the parts guys at your local GM dealer using the VIN.

GM social media used to provide an options list in PDF form by emailing them. Look at my build thread in the builds sub-forum. I think I posted the email address there. There's a link to it right in my signature.
