Another junkyard crawl with pics...

Ever get that feeling when you need a day to go junkyardin'?
Thats what i did yesterday. 43 degrees when i left home, 74 degrees 3.5 hours later at the yard, and 84 degrees when i left the yard.
On with the pics...

This one was interesting. 3/4 ton 4x4 with a rockwell, 67 gmc glovebox door, 292 fender emblems and some 72 parts up front. (pic 1)

The 66 chevelle looked to be on a 71-72 3/4 ton running gear.

Digging the white truck with the red interior.

A 69 3/4 ton 4x4 in a 1 year only color and one year only factory cab lights.

Nicely optioned 67 with factory cab lights.

And 4 hours later some of the junk i hauled home...
Found another key lock delete also.

Was fun but quite warm too. Bought all the parts in the last 2 pics.

Those are heater cable covers from c-40 and up.

Not much of that in MO. I can only think of maybe 1 or 2 yards in my area with older stuff, and one yard the owner acts as if he wants to hold onto most of the older stuff, or wont let anyone wander the yard. Most of it has been crushed long ago, and most was rusted away before it ever went to the salvage yards. Even the few older trucks I knew of that were sitting in fields or yards are disappearing - getting either bought up for parts or ??.

Those grill hoops on 1967 and 1968 are desirable. Take a magnet to see if they are steel.

You're lucky to have junkyards like this. Never seen anything like it in Kalifornia. If there were any they would have people living in them. Funny, but not funny.

Wow, I'd love to find something like that in Saskatchewan..what a cool gold mine! I went to one "yard" that had trucks like that but the guy lured us out just to tell us that he only wants to sell his trucks as whole..what a waste of gas and drive time. Frustrating!

Awesome, thanks for the pics. Reminds me that I need to get to my local yard to see what's left. Probably wait until winter though, the weeds, ticks, etc. are getting thick.

MY '67s are steel, with a D-shape x-section. One year only.
The MY '68s are usually anodized aluminum and have a raised ridge in the cross section.
Maybe some '68s got the steel hoops, but GM parts only ever offered the aluminum types as replacements.

Great to see junkyards like that still exist, they are becoming rare sites. This '65 has hard to find factory optional mirrors. They are much safer than the west coast" type. Very solidly mounted to door with contoured brackets, those ain't no cheap overseas made cipas.

I'm with you on vanishing junkyards. The ones around Tucson are totally fished out for '67-'72 stuff. Most have become condominium housing.
However, what's wrong with West Coast Jr mirrors? I like the way they can swing in for getting thru tight spaces -- or tuck in if hit by a branch instead of breaking. They pop right back into place. Earlier mirrors don't do that. They just break.

Looks like you did OK on the parts gathering. There are still a couple of yards like that around here. One has a lot of stuff but he can be hard to deal with.

That is a treasure yard. So much all good old stuff. I love seeing what a truck once was. That blue C/30 flatbed had windshield trim and chrome bumper. I bet that Chevelle 4wd swap was some sharp custom at one time... maybe not. If I knew about a yard like that I'd be getting the itch to go too!

The problem with west coast type mirrors is that the mirror head is in the line of sight. It can create a blind spot momentarily for objects in front of the mirror head. The "bus type" which special K correctly mentions, sits lower, below the line of site, and does not have the same blind spot. West Coast mirrors require extra effort to get the whole picture.

OK, I'll grant that shortcoming. I do have to get a second look to see if another car is ''hiding'' there. Second nature after about 50 years. Below the eyeline mirrors do not have that problem, true.
