Blazer won't start

I have a 1972 Blazer with a 1978 motor in it. The motor stopped turning over so I assumed it was the starter. I got a new starter and when I turn the key over the starter will engage the flywheel but will not turn over the motor?? Anyone have any ideas. Oh and the starter sticks in the flywheel it doesn't retract until I turn the flywheel by hand!

Thanks in advance

Re: Blazer won't start

Sounds like it’s hydraulicted
.
Cylinders are full of gas or coolant.
Start pulling spark plugs and see what comes out.

Or your fuel pump is leaking into the crankcase.
Check oil first.

Can you turn the engine over by hand with a breaker bar on the crankshaft snout?

Re: Blazer won't start

Play it safe.

Check oil
- is there oil in it?
- is it overful, suggesting something is getting in there?
- does it have strong gas smell?

Pull all 8 spark plugs/ assuming it's a v8
- any of them damaged?
- any moisture on them?
- heavy carbon?

Try barring the engine over.
- using a breaker bar or ratchet and I think a 5/8 socket turn the engine over clockwise from the crank bolt.
- be careful if it does not want to spin as Chevy uses a smaller crank bolt then other manufacturers.
- if it spins a full 2 revolutions, it should be good.

Starter engagement/ disengagement issues.
- Chevy starters can require shimming.
- look up shimming Chevy starter on google and buy starter shims at auto parts store
- usually have to pull the bendix/ starter gear out manually and measure clearance between it and the flexplate.
- a paper clip of the right thickness or something similar is best to use
