Production numbers question?
Random question, but searching through the build threads and pics threads, etc.. There seems to be a whole lot of 67 and 68 trucks, and a really whole lot of 71 and 72 trucks, but not nearly as many 69 and 70 trucks getting restored. Were there less made in 69 and 70? People restoring them as the 71-72 year model because the grill just looks better? I'm just curious.

Re: Production numbers question?
I don't believe there was a significant change in production numbers. My take is that, like most things in life, people are drawn to the extremes and things in the middle may appear not to get the attention like the first or last years. If you're familiar with The Brady Bunch.........remember Jan
I think it comes down to psychology, we like first gen because it's new, different, often odd and the last years are those that grabbed them up because they didn't like the square bodies, for instance and GM had "perfected" the model by then....despite the 75 less horsepower

Re: Production numbers question?
A major factor for car sales is obviously the economy. December 1969 to November 1970 was rated as a mild recession. If there really fewer 1969 and 1970 trucks , that could be a logical reason.

Re: Production numbers question?
For many years beyond these trucks being current, we always referred to them as '72s. I was partial to '71, which for all intents and purposes looks the same, and thought it odd calling them '72s. I got that people might be assuming it's a '72. But I got other trucks, 69/70s and it was the same, "Nice '72". It was all about the '72 Cheyenne Super when it came to "nice trucks" being prettied up.
As the trucks became more and more popular, with more car guys coming over to trucks and they became more deeply modified, the sleeker look of the sloped hood and front end with less bulky trim became more appealed to many. There isn't a bad year, a year no one wants, in the bunch. I think it's more that the 71/72s already have disc brakes and people buying 67/68s buy them to modify. The 69/70s give you a more similar look to the 71/72 but still have the 6-lug drum brakes. When it comes time for picking teams, the 69/70 may be picked later but they ain't sittin' on the bench!
