Door seals?

I have a 1970 GMC with the push on doors seals and my doors are extremely difficult to close. The doors close fine without the seals installed. 'IF' I remember correctly I got the seals from Brothers Trucks before Holley took over. I finished the truck 5 years ago, but don't drive it often, so I have just been living with it.

I've spent the last few hours researching 'door seals' here on this site. There are lots of threads that are years old. There are so many threads about glue on, push on, Honda Civic doors seals (I have found new seals), and Dodge Dakota doors seals.

Things change over time. Who has had good luck with getting doors to shut without slamming and what seals did you use?

You can remove the door seal, close the door and get in the truck to see if the gap where the seal resides is tighter in any particular area. If you find a tight spot you can use a set of wide jaw vise grips and gently bend the metal that seal attaches to away from the door to create more room for the seals. Pay particular attention to the front edge of the door near the hinges. Good luck.

Get the Honda Civic door seals. They fit absolutely perfect, are super easy to install, and really do not look a whole lot different than the factory version.

I just installed the '06 door seals on my Dually project. It it took me longer to get them off of the Honda than it did to install them on my truck. They fit perfect and the doors shut perfect.

My truck had the glue on seals...which didn't seal at all.
Then I bought Brother's Truck seals, which were push on, and had to wind up, and slam the doors, like I was mad at the world, every time I tried to close a door.
Then I bought brand new Honda door seals.
They fit perfect, seal good, and.....no cut to the right length BS. They are seamless...one piece.
These are the Honda part numbers I ordered for my 1970 GMC 1/2 ton.

"IF" I researched this correctly from the referenced thread above. You need seals from a 2006-2011 Honda Civic DX 2 door.

I used new Honda seals. They work well but are not a cure all for tight fitting doors . . . ask me how I know.

I got the push on seals from Classic parts . Pretty sure they were Precision . Fit was perfect and the doors close easily not as easy as say my 2021 Cherokee but I don’t have to slam them . The doors need to be adjusted properly in order to work it helped I didn’t have the fenders on at the time . Also there needs to be a small gap at the bottom so the air inside the seal can escape.

If you have to slam the door have you tried to open the window slightly ? Sometimes the truck is so tight that the air has no where to go . My 85 I leave the cowl vent open slightly and the doors shut much better . I did this after noticing that the door shut easily when the window was open closed not so much

I got a new set of of push on seals from Steele Rubber about two months ago. They went on fantastic and did require some oomph but that is lessening now. If one of the windows is cracked it helps but when you want to shut it with all the windows up it takes a push.

I noticed most new vehicles have a number of holes to let the air out of the seal. I was wondering if I could do that in a few places around the perimeter and it improve the closing without comprising the seal tightness.

I like that idea. But what method would you use to put holes in these seals.

I think drilling would be a bad idea or using a hot soldering pencil seems like it would be messy and look bad.

Id be cautious with Steele Rubber I’ve had mine on for a couple of years now and have developed creases in the upper corners on both sides that leak.

Not sure but I’ve not put a lot of thought into just yet either. I know drilling is out and figured any sort of heated thing would be a bit messy and inconsistent. I’ll ponder it a bit and I kept a few of the short pieces I trimmed off. Will practice on those.

As to the creases I’ll watch for those but it seems odd for them to form like that.

I ordered the exact ones referenced above and in the other other thread (# 72315 & 72355). Its interesting that some folks have said they fit with no cutting at all, one person said they were too short, and a couple of folks have said they were too long and needed to be trimmed.

I just installed mine tonight and I had to trim 2" out of them to fit my 67. Not a big deal at all.

Without changing anything else, these definitely reduced the amount of effort required to close the door. I only have a single test drive with them, but I didn't notice any changes to noise level / sealing

I had push on seals before but I don't know what brand they were as the prior owner installed them. FWIW, I figured I'd post up a quick picture of the Honda cross section vs Stock/Aftermarket replacement. Civic on the left, Chevy on the right. Pretty obvious which is going to be easier to compress.

Also note the arrow showing the extra little flap on the civic seal that sits inside the cab. IMO, its not super noticeable unless you're looking for it, but I'll probably end up trimming it off

My new precision seals are alright. You have to trim them, big deal. I had to slam the doors at first. RH is real nice now. Adjusted the LH striker a pinch for an improvement, seems it needed it anyway.

I bought the part numbers I referenced in my post from a Honda dealer. They are 1 piece. They fit perfectly. I had them on in 5 minutes.

Yep, just to be clear, I ordered the same ones, also from a dealer, they were one-piece continuous loop before I cut them to fit

I'm the op on this thread. This summer I started this thread and learned about the Honda Civic door seals. Back in June, where we were in Atlanta, I decided to try and locate these seals. I did find a pair in one of those "U-Pick_It" salvage yards. I cleaned the seals up a put them away until we got back home.

We got back home a few weeks ago and today I decided to try these Honda seal.

WOW! These seals are fantastic and a perfect fit without cutting anything. The seals fit a little loose, but I found out just squeezing the channel together makes them fit snug.

But the best thing is I can close my door without slamming them. It's just a gentle push and the doors close effortlessly. The total cost was just $20 bucks!

I highly recommend to those having trouble closing their truck doors to try these seals. You won't be disappointed.

Tell you one thing, check all your door hinge bolts sometime(s) after installing door seals. And a door hinge wrench (e.g. Snap On 9/16 " S 9607) is a must have at the pillars.
