To big block or not?

A friend of mine has recently told me he knows where a rebuilt 454 long block can be had for $500. Should I grab it or what?
What questions should I be asking about it?

Thanks, Krue

That sounds like a pretty good deal to me. Pull the pan if you can and look it over. Why was it pulled in the first place?

Never was installed. Was building the engine for a car, then wrecked the car before finishing the engine.

Figure on another 500-1000 bucks to get all of the big block special stuff to get it installed. I'm at like 2000 plus on all of my stuff, but I'm a obsessive freak.

$500 for a big block is sweet. Almost too sweet, if you want my honest opinion. Still, if you can hear it run I'd jump on that. There's absolutely nothing like mashing on a big block to put a grin on your face.

I am trying to get a little more info on it. But since I just spent 600 on the wife's stupid Intrepid (tranny) she is not gonna put up a fuss if I buy this engine.

Krue:

I am not sure what shape your powerplant is in currently but I would find out ALOT about that motor before you decide to make the move. The reason I say this is the swap could get a little pricey and if the '54 your buying is basically a two bolt dog that isn't worth doing anything too then I am not sure your going to gain much.

I would hate to see someone end up buying a cheap BB and end up spending a little fortune on the swap parts only ending up with a few hundred horses and dismal torque. It would be really good to find out as mush as can about it before you go through the motions.

Didn't mean to play the deal down, just lookin out for ya!
