68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
I just replaced the clutch, and new flywheel on my 68 C20 with 327
I have it all together and I can not put it in gear. The clutch won't disengage. I adjusted the clutch adjustment thinking it would help. The clutch fork is tight and it still doesn't disengage. The only difference from the original clutch which I know is original since we had the truck since new. It was a 3 finger clutch plate and the new one was 10 fingers or something like that. Finger height was the same measurement on both. I could not find the same style clutch. 99% sure the clutch disc is in correctly. Any suggestions on why it is not disengaging so I can put it in gear?

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
Was the new plate a flat or raised finger diaphragm style?
If not sure post a pic or a link to it. Your throw out bearing might be wrong. |

Hard to tell if the new one is raised or flat.Do you have a link to it or a part number.

Even though it’s on a Ford there’s a pic in here to show the difference between a flat and raised finger plate.

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
When I look at the 360 degree view it’s raised with a short bearing.
So I guess plate matches bearing so only thing left is you have the plate in backwards. |

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
I was almost 99% sure I had the flywheel in the right way according to the stamping on the flywheel. I will say I measured the finger height from a flat surface and they measured the same 2.5 inches or 2.75 inches but they were the same. I will pull the tyranny and see if I got it wrong.
I attached a picture of it on the truck

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
Are you sure that the clutch disc is in right? If it's backwards you can get this result, I think.

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
Would it help to move the push rod to the outside location near the spring?
Currently it's in the hole location closest to the transmission

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
Closer gives more movement of the throw out bearing, but higher pedal effort.

Post a pic of your throw out bearing when you take it apart.

I feel dumb about asking this question. You do have the drive shaft IN ?

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
I have it all tore back apart and yes the drive shaft was in the truck I am mot sure why that was asked. You can't put the truck in gear.
The clutch disc was in correctly as the side that says flywheel side was against the flywheel. Here are the pictures of the parts. Nothing jumped out to me.

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
I think that is stamped wrong. The side where the springs protrude go to the pressure plate side. The way that is the springs will be hung up on the flywheel bolt heads.
Hold that disc up against flywheel & see if it will turn. George |

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
I have the stamped side that says flywheel yo the fly wheel and the spring protrude out to the tyranny. Flatest side to the flywheel bit when I go home I will try to spin it

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
I went through this crap with my little yard buggy. I had a brand new bad pressure plate. I posted a video showing the problem on Youtube.
https://youtu.be/BhHYNeah9pE Test it on a shop press. |

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
Mis-matched set. You probably have an 11-7/8 disc when you need a true 11''. Measure across the pressure plate, then measure the disc

Re: 68 C20 new clutch won't disengage
Thanks I will check it out, it is supposed to be a 12" clutch.
Maybe the pressure plate is to small.
