Distributor installed wrong ?

I just noticed the distributor in the used motor I bought has the vacuum advance pointed towards cylinder # 3 on the driver side . Every SBC Ive seen has the advance pointed to cylinder # 6 on the passenger side . Is the distributor installed incorrectly ? I watched a video of it running as is very well .

Re: Distributor installed wrong ?

It doesn't matter which way it points, the only thing that makes it point to #6 is clearance of items like fire wall, carb, wires ect ect! BTW I always point it toward #6ish! You would just have to relocate the plug wires!

Proper orientation for clearance in relationship to manifold.

Re: Distributor installed wrong ?

If you're putting it in a 4WD you might have a problem with the coil connector running into the firewall.

Re: Distributor installed wrong ?

Having the vacuum advance pointing at the #6 cylinder provides you the ability to twist the distributor fully for proper timing. I would pull it out and reorient it. GM did a pretty decent job engineering that ignition system…

Re: Distributor installed wrong ?

It will most likely function just fine like that but my OCD would kick in every time I opened the hood. I'd pull it and orient it like you'd expect.
