Dana 44 ..missing spring/cup

I am going through a front Dana 44. 1978 3.42
There was no spring or spring cup on either side. The gear is Nedec...inner peice is spring loaded. When removing cap it seemed sprung out properly as though it functioned properly. Not sure there would be room for spring/cup.
Any idea? Thanks.

Re: Dana 44 ..missing spring/cup

Are you referring to the spring and cup that was needed for the solid drive slugs with a 203 t-case.? If so, not needed with a manual hub. Just the outer snap rings

Re: Dana 44 ..missing spring/cup

I was basing missing spring/cup (#62/63) solely on diagram I found online. This diagram is found in multiple places.

Re: Dana 44 ..missing spring/cup

The diagrams you posted have no locking hubs, just drive slugs and a cap for a full time 4wd. Refer to kwmech's post.

Re: Dana 44 ..missing spring/cup

Thanks for info. Mine is manual locking hub. Have to read more about full time setup butvaware of them.
I bought a matching set dana 44/12 bolt thought to be 3.08 from a 75 Blazer..but code on fromt tube dana 44 stated 3.42 1978. I did a rotation test on rear.. .3.42. Was unable to find code info from axle tube stamp. These will work as temporaries...my initial plan.

Pic is of rear tube...(photo flipped between gallery and posting here..sorry.)

Re: Dana 44 ..missing spring/cup

I have searched for you and yet to find a proper diagram. One thing i have noticed in the past few years is that the internet is a lot dumber since the deregulation of providers. Big business has taken it over. Mostly adds and what they want you to see now. Really have to dig to get something useful. Even then, it can be a fruitless endeavor. I will look in my books to see if there is anything useful.

Re: Dana 44 ..missing spring/cup

Thanks for searching..I assumed info easily available if your talking about front dana 44.
At this point I'm assuming my axle was complete. The 'full time' diagram...it seems the only difference with mine is the spring and cup as far as the outer axle portion. I did not purchase other set of axles as they were full time and one side buried in mud(wrecking yard). I had watched a YouTube on dana 44 breakdown but must have missed that it was full time.
I will be going through mine over the next month. Rebuilt 1 caliper..never done that. Cleaned up/painted axle tube and half the parts thus far. Next is install Moog ball joints. Appreciate the learning process..

One tip my brother gave me for searching for practical information is put 'forum" in front of your search terms. It gets you to sites like this discussing your problem or interest in the threads/forums.
Not sure how 'reaching' big businesses is in auto field suppressing information.. I know papers university students write from taxpayer grants are often congregated into a pay to read sites. Have to take the good with the bad. At least more information is available than ever before in history.
I just plowed through the mirror threads here again. I had grabbed a small mirror/bracket at local swap meet. It appears to be the 72 painted d29. I say that to say this site has a lot of useful information..sometimes just searching gives you the info your looking for no need to create another thread. Thanks 67-72chevytrucks.com !!
