Front U Joints Help

Well, either I'm driving an old-fashioned steam locomotive with a bell or my front U joints need to be replaced. I can't believe they gave out after only 51 years...

It's a 1972 K/5 Blazer with the original factory U joints. I measure the cap at 1.20 as nearly as I can tell. I imagine once I get it torn apart I might as well replace the ball joints and seals as well.

If any of you have part numbers and/or advice I'd be happy to hear from you.

Thanks.

Re: Front U Joints Help

What axles are under your Blazer? I've rebuilt Dana 44's and 60's using the BOM number stamped on the top of the left side tube. Here's a link to some good info on the Dana 44's https://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/c71...ont_chevy.html The axle u-joints are Dana Spicer 5-260X...

Re: Front U Joints Help

It's a Dana 44. Here's what I've ordered. I just don't want to get it all torn down and then end up waiting for something I neglected.

Re: Front U Joints Help

I would add a couple spindle bearing kits, SPK-1, replace the two lip seals and needle bearing on the back side of the spindle while you're in there.

Re: Front U Joints Help

The 5-760X u-joints are for 73 and up axles. The 69-72 axles take 5-260X u-joints. https://www.dennysdriveshaft.com/p17...fits_chev.html

This is partially true. There was a mid year change in '72 for the larger cupped U-Joints

72 with axles stamped 603333 or 603334 use the 5-760X joints

72 and older axles stamped 603351 or 603352 use the 5-260X joints

Probably not a bad idea. I did the bearings about 10 years ago, but I might as well do them while I'm in there. I'm not seeing the SPK-1 kit anywhere, though.

I'll check the stamping, but the 5-760X matches the cap size that I measured, and mine was one of the last 72s made (April of 1972).

He's probably ok then with the 1.188" (1-3/16") caps verses the 1.062" caps. He did give a 1.2" cap size...The BOM number would be handy... Do you have a link for the BOM lists?

My bad with a typo- should be SBK-1.
