cruise control from other cars/years
I have a 1972 C3500 with a 402 and manual trans.
I went to a junkyard a while back and there was a 1983 El Camino with a full CC setup, with the controls on the column turn signal lever. I almost grabbed the setup but didn't because I couldn't figure out if it'd work with my truck. I would have grabbed everything including the turn signal lever. I would have just let the lever flop around under the dash until I could figure out a better setup. With that said, are most CC assemblies from old GM vehicles interchangeable with eachother? It doesn't need to be pretty, I just want it to work. |

Re: cruise control from other cars/years
I thought the similar thing a couple years back BUT I did grab all the parts but have yet to install them. I see no reason why it wouldn't work. The parts don't know what they're attached to, just a big or small block. It'll be one of those projects when all the other stuff is out of the way

Re: cruise control from other cars/years
I agree. No different than an LS swap. It may look different than the factory setup but it will work. You may need to fab a bracket or two. Just be very careful you do not hang up the linkage somehow. No, "it will be ok", because it won't be ok at the worst possible time.
I would love to find a CC package somewhere. I just need to start looking I guess. Not too many junk yards around here and everything is newer than 1995 it seems. |

Re: cruise control from other cars/years
I Installed one like the after market setup pictured below on a late 70s Honda Accord and another on a '79 Blazer back in the day. Worked great. I found the unused one pictured below at a swap meet for $15 about 9 years ago. Of course it's not GM. I bet there are more like it "out there"

In the early 80's there was a generic unit called "Escort II" that was a reasonable aftermarket solution, with a vacuum accumulator, so it should adapt to carb models if you can still find them

Re: cruise control from other cars/years
I installed a GM cruise control setup in a '72 I used to own.
https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...d.php?t=151318 The systems found in '70s and early '80s GM vehicles are mostly the same, and they are a stand-alone system where the only electrical connection to the vehicle is for power. The single-button cruise turn signal levers found in '70s vans fit perfectly on our columns. I am planning on adding one of these systems to my current '68. I will need to convert to a cable throttle pedal to make room for the diaphragm actuator at the rear of the engine. I was toying with the idea of using a mid to late '80s GM cruise control on my truck, but the challenge with those systems is that they use an optical sensor located on the back of the speedometer to measure speed. It might be possible to use a cable-driven VSS generator from Dakota Digital to drive one of these systems. |

Re: cruise control from other cars/years
I've spent a lot of time reading through this website, they are known for having great quality components, and they have some turn signal stalks that basically look like they were made by GM. I believe some people have posted about Rostra in the forum, but I have not found a detailed walk through of the installation on one of our own trucks.
I agree that if you've done an LS swap before something like this would likely be easy, but it isn't something I would tackle without more research. https://www.rostra.com/universal-aft...-by-rostra.php https://www.rostra.com/aftermarket-c...ra.php#2503304
