steering column help
How's it going guys. I have a 1964 c10 that I am trying to swap out a steering column from what appears to be late 80's- early 90's GM I want to keep the original handbrake from the 64 and was wondering if anyone had done this or can guide me in the right direction.

Re: steering column help
I've swapped a column from an 80s S10 into my 64, the hand brake wouldn't have room to put under the column, so I adapted an 80s full size foot brake.

Re: steering column help
yeah I really would like to keep the original handbrake if at all possible so I was thinking about using the mounting clamp from an 88-94( https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=...BAgCEAw&adurl= ) and then trying to fabricate a bracket for the handle. just curious do yuo have any more pictures of your set up?

Re: steering column help
This is how I mounted the column. It is much bigger diameter than the 64, mine is also a tilt and column shifter. Note the angles welded onto the stock S10 mount, then it fits in the dash hole for the column. No room underneath for the flat plate that mounts the brake lever. The two holes in the black plate mount the stock column bracket, no room for that, either. The mount plate that I used (altered) is the one you refer to from google.

Re: steering column help
do you think that you can get away with using those two holes on the bottom of the bracket(google link) to fabricate something that would bolt to the two holes on the dash that the old steering bracket bolted up to?

Here's how I did my tilt column and kept my stock emergency brake setup. Scroll down to post #4

Re: steering column help
If you have a bandsaw and a welder you can make anything out of steel. As I see the only trouble is how low the bracket/handle will be. Could be a real "knee-knocker".

Re: steering column help
Shortbox thanks for the reply I was looking at your thread on how you installed it but yours comes from a 70's van and I only have the 90's column available so I want to try to use it. But for sure your method is something to consider.
Mountaineer of course I just don't have a welder due to space so my fabricating skills have been limited by a tad |
