Question Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

I have seen on some photos when the Cowl is off there is a triangle like sponge / buffer / seal that is at the top. Not sure if all trucks have them or only if you have the Pillar to hinge seals too.

Anyone have a source (official name)? Is it like glued in place?

Re: Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

Sorry, never mind found them on GMC Paul's when Googling "67-72 Cowl Vent Seals Under Cowl Panel"

On the below page, 2nd Item:
https://gmcpauls.com/rubber&ws1.htm
"1967-72 Truck, Blazer, Jimmy, Suburban, Panel Correct style & fitting hood to cowl foam end seals, these install on either end of the hood to cowl seal under cowl edge sealing entire cowl to cab area not covered by hood to cowl seal. Includes 2, 1 each for left and right side."

Re: Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

I have never seen these on all the trucks I have ever had. Is this something the trucks in the states had?

Re: Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

I could not say, I only saw it when looking at the photo's Mr.Mud1 send me. They have to be a thing or GMC Paul's wouldn't sell them.

From Mr.Mud1's photo it looks to be glued in placed - I am assuming it has shifted towards the cab in his photo. I did remove my cowl some years back to put install stainless steel trash guards. But the life of me I can't remember if those little things were there. I needed to order some other things so I got them too - only 3 bucks.

Re: Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

yes sir, they're glued in place with what looks like contact cement or something similiar.i've seen them in every truck i've ever had that the cowl off.i don't think they shifted, might be the angle the picture was taken from and an extra wide slop of glue in the factory when they brushed it on.

Re: Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

it isn't the angle that lead me to believe it moved but that black smug I see next to it on the paint...

Re: Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

Hi Richard.that black smudge is dry glue.i think they were generous when they were slobbering it on at the factory and the sponge seal might have slid a little towards the windshield post as they applied to the wet glue maybe?my theory anyway.

Re: Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

Interesting seeing this. I somehow thought these went at either end of the cowl seal. Guessing a Cheyenne/ Cheyenne Super deal like the fender dust seals

Re: Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

Well, I don't feel so bad posting about them if you guys haven't heard of them.

Edit:
I have added these photos and link to GMC Pauls to my Rebuilding / Installing Hinge Pillar to Fender Seal thread. Seems like a good place for others to see when they search for inner cowl/fender seals.

That's interesting. I wonder if it was a certain plant that added those?

I know you are working on your Pillar/Fender seals - did your truck not have these?

Re: Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

Now that is very interesting, we have veteran members that have seen them all the time and others never - how strange! I love a good mystery and feel kind of good that I exposed it.

After I posted my question and then almost immediately found the part on GMC Paul's site I thought I posted a really useless thread...

Back in May I was at the C10 Nats in Texas and a gentleman was looking my 72 Cheyenne Super C20 over pretty hard. He asked me if it was an original Cheyenne Super and I told him it was. He asked if I could open the door so he could check something. Not sure what he was checking but opened the door he looked between the door and cab then said it is an original. He told me these pillar seals were only added to Cheyenne Supers and mine were original and never been removed. He also said the chrome tailgate handle was another item that was given to the Cheyenne Supers. Mine has it also. Not sure if this is true or not but it sounded ok to me. I bought my 72 in 1993 from the original owner.

As for Cheyenne Supers only having the pillar/fender seals is untrue. Cheyenne and I think some Custom's had them too or so other threads about these seals say. Though it is true if you have a Cheyenne or Cheyenne Super it is a sign it may not be a real one if those aren't present. In my case they are missing but I have used a snake camera and spied the sheet metal screw holes where the seal mounting points go (or at least most of them).

Some people that fake out Cheyenne Supers may forget the tailgate handle. Then you have a 71 tailgate handle that is chrome and then the 72 is a chrome cover. Another error is having the Super Emblem on the fender shifted wrong between the left and right sides on the front fenders (which is a odd error to make if you ask me). I am actually going through "upgrading" to a Super... so I have done a lot of reading on doing this correctly as possible (though I went with a 71 type tailgate handle, I like that better and that's my prerogative LOL). At least I got the correct glove box wood grain / emblem for 72. :-D

Re: Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

very interesting.my 72 Cheyenne Super truck was built in Fremont,Sept 71 and has the sponge seals from new under the cowl panel.the spid decal says it's an original Cheyenne Super truck.i bought the truck from the family of the original owner after it spent 25 years in storage.no way to know for sure but i'd bet it was never fooled with.had original paint and 74,000 miles.

Re: Under Cowl Seal / Buffer?

That probably explains why my truck doesn't have the seals -- it's only a Custom.
