Gas Tank cover required?

When installing a “Carpet Gas Tank Cover”, is the Fiberboard GasTank Cover required?
Does it give a smoother base for the carpet to lay on?
I’m about to order my new carpet and plan to also get the carpet cover for my gas tank.
My original cardboard cover finally “gave up the ghost”, so I’ll have to order a new on, IF it’s needed. If not, I won’t bother.

Re: Gas Tank cover required?

Bucket seat trucks did not also have the cardboard cover. The carpet covers have a jute backing.

So you’re saying no, the cardboard wasn’t under the carpet?

My truck came with a bench seat but I have since installed buckets

Re: Gas Tank cover required?

Correct. I added a note regarding a jute padding added to the the carpet. Apparently we both hit "enter" at the same time.

Re: Gas Tank cover required?

My 67 didn't have any cardboard. The rug was glued to the tank at the bottom from factory with some black type glue. I will not glue it when I'm finished with the interior. Also mine had no jute on of from the factory.

Re: Gas Tank cover required?

I wonder what all the variances were factory. I found my 71 fremont built Deluxe and bench seat with the fiber board, and I'm pretty sure it's flaps fit where it needed to without needing clips.

Found my 72 fremont built Super and bench seat with just insulation glued onto the tank, and perhaps to the floor underneath the tank. Though that may not have been factory.

I installed this, post 50 into my 71. Nice cover, thoughtful provisions and easy to install. It's pending seat belts and flooring yet. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=846616&page=2

Re: Gas Tank cover required?

Thanks for all the reply’s and input.
I think I’m gonna use a Fiberboard cover under my carpet, aiming at giving it a smoother appearance.
They’re less than $30 so if I don’t like it later, I can always take it out.

Re: Gas Tank cover required?

I didnt put the cardboard in when I did my bucket swap, the ACC cover lays pretty darn smooth once you get it installed. I had to trim it at the bottom where it meets the floor.

That lays much better than mine, though I'm not quite done. I was going tuck the excess underneath, more play with a bench seat perhaps, but after seeing yours, I think I'll let the carpet layer figure that one out, I opted out flooring and upholstery.

My top RH side leaves some to be desired but that corner has the vapor assembly, and that's more than a few lines. To a lessor degree, the lower corner is effected as well, Does your tank have the vent assembly? Ooops, that's a 1968.

Is yours the molded cover or what they call their loop? Mine is the loop, with jute.

I think it was the molded. It has some shape to fit around the tank. on the passenger side it kind of fill the whole space of the cab corner. At the bottom I cut some excess off and then slipped it under the floor carpet as the floor carpet had a beading on it to finish it off where the tank cover did not.

Good to know, thank you.

Perfect timing!
Just what I wanted to hear to proceed with my tank cover and mass backed carpet.
I was concerned with the excess on the bottom, how it was fitted to blend with the carpet and then to cut for the seat belt hardware.
In my case measure twice cut once.
Thanks Tony and CAMAROBOY68SS.
Big help!

Re: Gas Tank cover required?

Well its installed
As others had said, I had to trim the bottom of the tank cover to tuck it under the finished edged ACC carpet.
The excess I used to finish and cover the small gaps at the door jambs.
This was an older non molded cover that I purchased several years ago.
It fit and laid down pretty well for the style.
Overall I’m very happy with the outcome and it will finish off nicely behind the bench seat.
The carpet fit was right on with only some slight trimming required at the thresholds.
