IT CRANKED!!! But Its backfiring...

Got it all back together and git it to crank and run a few moments. It is backfiring out the carberator. What do I need to do? Is advancing the timing mean turning it counterclockwise or clockwise?
SOUNDS GOOD with just the ram horns on it!

normally it means your timing is off. could be a vacumm leak also. Did you just get done building this motor or? Your distrubutor might be off 180 degrees. CAUTION: if you are running just ramhorns with no exhaust system behind it, do not run your motor more than a minute or two. the cold air will travel up there and warp your valves!

Total rebuild. Bored 30, new heads, pertronix replacing points in stock distributor, new intake, new 4bbl carb. I guess this makes it all simple huh....
I turned the distributor counter clockwise say from 8 oclock to 7 oclock and the back firing stopped.
Ill set the timming later now that the breather is finished burning.

Now I got to get the manual choke cable replaced so I can drive it.
Any tips on how to get the choke cable off???...I have to replace it with a longer one....
Thanks for the tips and Ill put the tubes on the ram horns next also.
