I bought my hinges from LMC, work great. The process os pretty straight forward. You need to have a jack or stool support the door so when the top hinge is removed (6 bolts is it) you can remove the old hinge and install the new one. It will take some fiddling to get the door to properly line back up. Not hard, just time consuming.

Getting the original bolts out, with the fender installed, is the toughest part of this job.
These bolts are fine threaded and over 1" long. You can oil the ones in the door before removal. If they come out hard, Run them in a ways and then out. I have a set of rebuilt, blasted and primed, originals if you are interested. If you purchase new, PM me. I may be interested in your old originals. Cheers. |

Here's a link to my repair thread and if you scroll down to post 887 where I posted a bit of information and photos of the wrenches I used to get my hinges off and back on after replacing the pins.

Re: Help/Tips Replacing Upper Door Hinges on '68...
I too am replacing the hinges on a 68. I bought a set on the board here, and then picked up a couple more sets at junkyards. I have my front fenders off so it it is pretty easy to get at.
So far as tips go, use a grease pencil and trace around where your hinges are right now on the pillar and on the door itself: so you have a shot of putting your doors back on correctly. There is a lot of adjustment to be had with the hinges and that will save a lot of time.

Re: Help/Tips Replacing Upper Door Hinges on '68...
Yah, Damn...I'm into it now....Putting the door back on and it's all out of whack!!!
I'm just replacing the top hinge and Yes I did mark it. I tried just replacing the top one without removing the door but I ended up having to remove the door from the body to try and align it back up... No go and at 12:30 am there she sits with a cockeyed door...Maybe I should have just knocked the pins out of the new and old hinge Door Stoppers and replaced them if I could and tap the ones out of the new ones into the old hinges without taking them off the truck If That's Possible...Heck I don't know... It's 3:30 AM.......I woke up and can't sleep because of this Shi...uh Dilemma!.... |

Re: Help/Tips Replacing Upper Door Hinges on '68...
Good to hear you got things straightened out.
Some years back I got a set of repop hinges in a deal with a bunch of other stuff. A year or so later the hinges on my Burban had gotten really floppy so I decided to install them. However after pulling them out of the boxes and inspecting them I noticed the holes in the brand new hinges had been hogged out and were pretty much irregular ovals. At that point I decided to rebuild the hinges I had instead of fighting parts someone else had already given up on.

Re: Help/Tips Replacing Upper Door Hinges on '68...
I bought this door installer from Harbor freight more than 20 years ago for around $80.
Seldom used and hard to store, but worth every penny. I laugh when I watch those TV car shows. They have a $100,000 water jet, but when they install doors, they have to find two men and a boy to do the job. It's been years since HF sold them, so don't bother looking.
