Ol' Blue's new engine??

I picked up a 5.3L from a 2011 Chevy truck. I got it from a guy I know and am very pleased with the condition. The internals look good and clean.

My question is, which engine is it. It's a 5.3 from a 2011 truck, cast iron block, 243 cathedral port heads and flat top pistons.

I've tried the online search stuff, and it may be a LY5, but I'm not sure.

If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Re: Ol' Blue's new engine??

According to this, should be LC9 or LMG.
VIN will tell for sure.

Re: Ol' Blue's new engine??

VIN decode would be the best answer because it will get us all the details on donor.
as to what other features it has like VVT lifters or not.
2011 is right at change over time from on set to another.
Also let us know which ECU it has with it. That tells us a lot as well.

Re: Ol' Blue's new engine??

LMG would have these casting number 12576177, 12576178, 1589779 Iron block
LC9 would have these casting numbers 125771048, 12601900, 12569513, 12568573 aluminum block

these may help you get closer to the fine details as they say
since you said iron block thinking LMG

Re: Ol' Blue's new engine??

Unless weight is critical that is a popular build canditate to build and engine that will get with the program.

Re: Ol' Blue's new engine??

Thanks guys.

The VIN is not available as the vehicle has already been crushed.

I will look at the casting numbers and see if I can find the answer.

This is the engine that will be going in Ol' Blue. I am looking at Brian Tooley Racing for the parts to do the DOD/AFM delete. Should be interesting.

Re: Ol' Blue's new engine??

If you’re on a budget and you plan on doing a bit of tuning work I recommend getting HP tuners or efi live and license the truck to the software yourself. Two reasons. Allows gou to flash the ls Ecm and trans yourself we you want to make some basic adjustments like tire size. Idle rpm turning off some engine light non needed error checks etc. it allows you to shop tuner guys if you need one and you don’t have to call them every time you want an update and pay. I don’t mess with the tuning values. So I know I won’t break anything. The tuners will use your license and this also allows them to remotely do it. And you don’t have to send the ecm. I’m

I will, because I will need more detail. I hope to get the block, crank, heads and pistons to the machine shop this week.

Re: Ol' Blue's new engine??

I saw your build thread https://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/...=846353&page=5

You must be planning to put a carb on it as part of the 'looks like SBC' plan?

It sounds like you have a LS swap under your belt already. So you know they are pretty darn good. Personally I'd stick with stock LS intake and computer. And recommend HP tuners to anyone doing that. There is a pretty good community around it and everything you need to know to redo a factory harness or roll your own is out on the net for the taking. Or buy a harness.
It's probably easier to find someone that can sort out issues or put a tune on an LS than a carburetor these days.

someone should make a fake roots blower shell to cover a LS intake and coil packs

Re: Ol' Blue's new engine??

Lee, I'm looking at an intake that runs the throttle body on it, just looks a little like a carb. Lokar has one in their LS series stuff. It'll definitely be LS, I'm just trying to confuse people with the look.

I do have one LS under my belt, it is totally stock with the re-flashed computer and thinned out wires. Had 79K on it when pulled from the 06 Avalanche, and it runs great!

Re: Ol' Blue's new engine??

HCB3200, we have a winner! The block is 1589779, making it a LMG. Thanks.

"Had 79K on it when pulled from the 06 Avalanche, and it runs great!"

I can vouch for the 06 engine. 280K and still rolling. only thing it has had is a water pump change out and a alternator. Needs a rear main seal sooner or later.

Not a fan of cutting harnesses. found out its just much easier to coil up the extra and hide them. They have come in usefull as spare wire runs. Re-adding stuff I thought i would not (like AC) and useful for extra connectors available when I break one doing something in a hurry

Probably not going to confuse most people. LS swap is more common than Chinese tools at a swap meet.

It's likely to be etched or stamped into the block.

I went that route with my LS1 motor. All Holley with a stock Throttle body and Delmo adaptor.

Thanks. The front drive is not cheap but it takes the guess work out of mix and matching accessories hoping that the pulleys all line up.

I have over 10,000 miles on this set up with 0 issues.

What do they call their system? I looked briefly, but nothing jumped out at me.

Re: Ol' Blue's new engine??

There are options on accessory placement and upgrades like the black coating and a upgraded harmonic balancer. I went with the "Mid mount" in black with the upgraded harmonic balancer.

Thank you

Well... ok. I suppose it's not fair to judge folks outside this area. We've still got enough old-timers at the shows to ID a "not a smallblock" engine.

Re: Ol' Blue's new engine??

Little late to the party, but maybe this will help somebody else - looks like the OP is well down the road.

Every LS block I've ever seen has a laser-etched VIN on the machined surface of the deck on the back of the motor on the driver's side - there's no need to know the VIN on the chassis it came out of.

The deck has a 'lip' that the cylinder head does not cover, and that's where you'll find it. When I'm junkyard hunting motors, I usually take a little steel wool with me to rub the deck to reveal the VIN.

Per Jwebb, the 8th place of the VIN is the engine.

There's a pretty good rundown of all the LS variants here-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genera...l-block_engine
