Blew a tire

i, replace my fuel pump and fuel filter on my l s swap and got my truck running great went for drive and blew a left front Tire At seventy miles an hour This gives me an excuse to finally order the bigger tires that I wanted these are 255 60 15, and I order 275 60 15. I knew I really needed some tires. But I was hoping to get a few more months Out of them. But the valve stem knew better. Luckily, I was only like a mile from my work and they were nice enough to bring me my forjack and my impact gun and my tire inflated. The spare tires from ninety two, but it held enough air to get me off the highway

Re: Blew a tire

Judging by the condition of the white lettering, do I dare ask what the date stamping is on the tires?

Re: Blew a tire

A blown Passenger Rear at 60 MPH, on Superstition Highway, Route 60, really screwed up my '71 GMC Jimmy's side. I had to keep on the freeway at speed for half a mile longer because some goofball in a Volvo was trying to tell me I'd blown a tire.
YEAH! I KNOW... Get outta my way! And I proceeded to pull over to the right. Six lanes. [The berm on the Left wasn't safe, or not enough room.]
Steel belted radials 33x12.50x15. Steel belt took out my side molding, folded back some rear panel, ripped the molding off my tailgate, shredded my taillight, bulb, and its molding. Let's not talk about paint. Within a week, the other three tires went bad.

Exclamation Re: Blew a tire

Tires are not what they once were. It seems that they dry rot at a alarming rate. The 7 year replacement schedule is legit.

Re: Blew a tire

Was it the tire or the valve stem that failed?

Pretty sure was vavle stem that failed I've had to replace a few but at 70 mph the tire didn't survive.

Re: Blew a tire

Glad no damage or injuries . Tires and brakes(hoses) are one thing I redo every 8 or so years . 14 years is way past the margin of safety . Rubber products aren’t natural rubber anymore . Natural rubber lasted much longer than the synthetic . The 7 year thing is based on average milage that people put on cars . Most people the tires need to be replaced because if wear in 5 to 6 years .

Re: Blew a tire

What was that like? I've blown rear tires at that speed and it was no big deal, but destroying a front tire at 70 seems a bit scary.

It wasn't the blow out that scare me so much as where I was when it happened I was pulled over in the left side emergency lane and people wherent paying attention, all I heard was a loud Whoosh of air left front went down and hear the classic flat tire Thumping noise it never got schakely or anything

Re: Blew a tire

This one de-laminated in the driveway overnight. When I took it in to swap the rest out, the oldest guy there said they sold these when he first started working there.
Date codes were for 1989.
With proper alignment, it coulda gone another couple hundred yards ;-)

Re: Blew a tire

Glad that worked out OK. The (long since discontinued) 16.5" BFG KOs on my K20 are getting up there in age but appear good.

Re: Blew a tire

.

Tires on my '67 have plenty of tread but were installed new in 2016...gee that's 7 years...they're not dry rotting yet as they've been kept inside their entire life so maybe I can squeeze another couple years out of them Don't want to break things with a tire flapping around at speed!

Thanks for the reminder gents.

I see guys on TV car shows driving on tires that are WAY past 10 years old. Flirting with disaster!
