Selling my 1971

I'm putting my 1971 C10 up for sale. I'm not sure how much to ask for it. I got it last summer from my uncle. It is a 1971 C10 2WD short bed, 307 2bbl, 3 on the tree, stock truck. My uncle bought it new in 71. The motor is solid with only 56K on it. The body is in bad shape with a lot of rust from the salt on the WV roads. I live in Arkansas and was just wonerding what a fair price to ask would be. Any help would be apreciated. Thanks.

Pics really help to get an idea of what it's worth. Without seeing it and considering that 67-72 trucks are pretty common in that area of the country, I'll go out on a limb and say around $500-750. That's based on your area, what sounds like a lack of desireable options, a relatively unpopular running gear combination, and your description of the condition of the body. Who knows, though?

As a point of reference, I paid $1,100 for my 68 CST here in Northern Maine where these old trucks are quite uncommon. It had/has a good running 307 with a Quadrajet, a TH400 transmission, gauges (no tach), 3.73 posi, factory A/C, and power steering. I've got rust in the lower doors, rockers, cab struts, and cab corners. The front-end clip is great and the bed is about a 7 out of 10.

Pics help a lot. If you part it out, I'd like the driveshaft, it's exactly what I need, factory small block, 3 speed manual, SWB 2wd driveshaft. The unpopular kind that nobody seems to have. Guess the truck I'm building unique.

You say the body is in bad shape. The above pic doesnt look what I would consider bad. It looks like a newer bed was installed. Was the bed the bad part? The bed always seems to be the hard part to find so that and like the above said the drivetrain those add against your truck.

What year is that bed? It looks 80's.

The bed is a bed from a later model, I'm not sure what year. The man in the picture is my uncle who bought the truck new in 1971. The truck only has 57,000 miles on it. The body and underside have some rust problems from being driven on WV roads for 32 years. This is the original paint and the interior is in good shape. What do you think it's worth? You guys sure know a lot about these old chevy trucks! Thanks again for all of the inputs. (another pic I found)

Can you be more specific on the rust problems? From the last picture, it looks like a $750-800 truck, but that's assuming that the floorpan, cab corners, and cab struts are all in relatively good shape (rockers are a "gimme"). The later model bed doesn't help your effort much, IMHO. In fact, depending on the buyer, it might actually detract from the value.

In general, I see it this way... any truck that runs well is worth $1000. I'll subtract a little (say $100) for a 6 cylinder. I'll subtract a little less for a 307 (say $50). I'll add (maybe $200) for a big block. I'll add for options such as A/C or power steering. I'll subtract for rust. You get the idea. That's just my personal system and it's generally held up well over the years.

Take my 68 CST for example. Here's a guesstimate of what I'd consider fair market value:

$1000 for the truck (baseline)
+$100 for the CST package
+$100 for factory A/C
+$150 for the TH400
+$250 for strong 350 small block
+$100 for the 3.73 Positrac
+$25 for power steering
+$250 for originality (one owner)
-$500 for rust
-------------------
$1475 total

Now, I paid $1,100 for the truck, paid $700 for the engine, and I've got about $1,100 in wheels and incidental parts. In other words, I've got about $2,900 invested in the truck or nearly double what it's probably worth.

Needless to say, I can't sell the truck for what I've got in it, but I wouldn't let it go for my fair market value, either. If I were in the market to sell my truck and I wasn't in a hurry, I'd split the difference to $2,200. Odds are good that somebody's willing to pay that for it.

+$100 for the OE dog dish hubcaps.

The incorrect bed is a bed is going to hurt you. On the plus side an unmolested original has a lot going for it. Too many of these trucks have gone thru misguided modifications/repairs that make them unappealing IMO. Having to undo somebody elses work is a major turn-off.

My guess is $750 - $1000. You could part it out for a whole lot more, I'll take the driveshaft
