New to forum, front sheet metal ??? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hi,

First I like to say this is a FANTASTIC site. I've been checking it out the past few days and have only scratched the surface.

When I was 18 I bought a 72 C20 that was fully loaded, factory tach, tilt wheel, amfm, tool box, 402, air, two tone red and white, and about anything you could want. the frame was gloss black as with wheel wells and core support. Everything else was Red and shiny (I used to wax the underside of the bed, cab and hood). But me being young as I was wanted a shortbed stepside so I sold it. Boy was I stupid, the truck was mint. I am a little older now (32) and have been looking for my Stepside for a little bit until I found a project that needed a home, which brings me to my first of probably many questions.

I just recently bought a 67 chevy stepside shortbed (Ebay $250) but it has a 72 front clip and doors on it. I like the 67 front end better, what all would I need to change to put it back to the 67 front end. Can I use my core support and doors? I originally thought the only difference was the hood, grill, and marker lights in the fenders. It's not that I want it to be original, I just like that style better.

I think I got a good deal on the truck since it had the factory tow hooks which I alread sold and made most of my money back. The doors and most of the front sheet metal are in nice shape. The passenger front fender was missing the lower front dogleg (ripped off???) so I already bought a nice used one for it (before I didn't know I couldn't use the 67 hood and grill with them)

Also, I have a 396 that I will be putting in it. Are the motor mounts located in a different location than a small block (do I need special mounts for the frame?).

Can I swap out the rear axles with 5 bolt ones from a later gm? It already has 5 lug discs on the front.

Anyone know of any good boneyards in Northeast Ohio that might have some parts?

P.S. Sorry to be so long winded, I'm pretty excited about the truck (and this site). Hopefully in a couple of years it will be something to be proud of.

want to say hi from another ohio member. to change back over to a 67-68 front end you need core support fenders hood and grill. the motor mounts can go into eithe the 6banger position or the v8 position. the only problem you will run into is you need to get bb motor mounts. should be able to get them off the parts board. I dont know about the axles. where are you located in ohio if close we could meet up and do some b.s. ing. never mind you are way up and over there.

Welcome to the board. I will let the more experience ones answer your questions. I know you have to change core support to change to 67. Good luck with your project you find alot of great information here.

Welcome to the board from West Michigan!

You will need the 67 clip, (hood, grill, fenders, and radiator support) to make the change that you want to do.

You will need big block mounts and on the rear end, the easiest way is to swap out the whole differential for a 71 or 72. The 71-72 axles are longer than the 67's so you can end up with a spacer problem and the drums hanging out.

I don't know of any yards in Ohio, (Longhorn probably does).

welcome to the board from the great state of TEXAS. you can use the axles out of a early 70 model 5 bolt they are the shorter length. you can also get conversion axles or have your axles redrilled for the 5X5 bolt patern (probably the easies and most economical means) just got to find an axle shop that can redrill axles.

check out the parts board and the FAQ board and use the search option at top it can be handy too. good luck and throw up some pictures when you get a chance

Welcome to the board from North Texas , your best bet would be to find an entire front clip. as for the rearend find a donor truck or rear and just swap them.

Welcome to the board from frigid central Ohio...at least we haven't been getting all the snow you have been getting though.

All the advice you have been getting is pretty much correct, but I have a question for you though, do you have a coil spring rear, or leafs?
if you have a coil set up, then I know where there is a whole rear, most likely for cheap too.
I'll be heading back out there this friday (Brrrr...a high of 17 degrees...but I'll be out there none-the-less).

Well most of you probably seen it on Ebay around christmas time. No motor, no trans, and no title. Already got motor and trans and have sent of to title board the documents needed to get a new title.

This is how it was when I picked it up. Still looks the same although I already spent over $1500 in parts and getting it home from Georgia.

Longhorn, I would appreciate it if you check on that rearend for me. I will be going to Kentucky the weekend of the 24th so columbus would be on the way

Hi frost89434, yes I do go by cc_bob (Cub Cadet Bob) on Ebay. I am also into old Cub Cadet garden tractors. As strange as it may seem there are a lot of people who are into them just like everyone here is into these trucks. Not to mention they will be financing all the parts I need for my truck. BTW, the bed rails look great.

My plan is to gather as many parts as possible before tearing ino the truck. That way I won't have to wait until I get the money or the parts arrive and lose interest. Besides it's TOO cold outside right now.
