Junk Yard PS Conversion?
Bad shoulders and the short amount of driving I did in the truck last summer lead me to want PS. Even though I love the simplicity of the truck as it sits.
I see plenty of conversion kits on the thread and install threads. But when I look at RockAuto they show some of the PS pumps as the same part number from 67 through the 80s square bodies. So I am curious, if I pull a steering box and PS pump out of a square body will it bolt up? Understand that I will need a different pulley and pitman. Thanks guys. |

Re: Junk Yard PS Conversion?
For the most part yes. Some where around 77 I believe the fittings on the hoses went metric. (Someone correct me if I've gotten the year incorrect ) But none of the squarebody hoses will work without modification of the inner fender well.
That being said none of the 67-72 hoses currently on the market will work without modification to the hose or the fender well so pick your poison. What year truck? 67's have there own special challenge when adding power steering. Welcome aboard. And please post some pictures our your truck. We do love photos of trucks around here.

Re: Junk Yard PS Conversion?
As HO455 mentioned
The later ones have the Metric stuff. Personally, With your swap I would try to stay with the earlier ones. I remember your truck in the welcome post you made. Be sure to pay attention to see if your 327 has the short or long water pump. This will affect the brackets and belt alignment. Also, with yours being a 67 4WD. You will have to add a dimple in the frame. And obviously you will need a 4wd steering box.

While you're scrounging the salvage trucks, maybe snag a hydroboost while you're at it if you've considered power brakes. Not much more work since you'll already be into the messy part

Re: Junk Yard PS Conversion?
There are two types of pump, one with a bolt-on pulley and one with a press-on pulley. They are interchangeable with the correct pulley. The earlier reservoirs are rounded and the later reservoirs have squared edges. The pump should fit into either reservoir.

Thanks for the link. When you say they are interchangeable with the correct pulley, do you mean the water pump pulley? Or the same pulleys will work not he bolt-on or press-on pumps? |
