Transmission shifter linkage questions
Thanks to everyone here I got my transmission sorted out. Now I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong on the linkage. I have an aftermarket steering column with a column shifter and the transmission is a TH350. I have installed the factory style shifter linkage but have been unable to get the column indicator to match the transmission position. When I installed the linkage I put the column sifter in Park and the transmission in Park and locked down the adjustable rod. But when I move it out of park none of the transmission stops/detents match the column indicators. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? Should I scrap the factory type and use Lokar cable or rod type shifter linkage?

Re: Transmission shifter linkage questions
I focus on the behavior of the shifter when shifting between N and D. You shouldn't have to pull back on the shifter to shift between these two positions. Pay close attention, and you'll notice that one will likely be easier to shift into than the other. This will mean that the position of the shifter rod needs to be adjusted slightly. Keep on making minor readjustment until it shifts with an even feel between N and D. You should feel the shifter lever hit the limiter evenly in both directions just as it shifts into N or D.

Re: Transmission shifter linkage questions
Chock the tires or set the park brake. Put the shifter in "D" and set the selector on the transmission to the Drive position. The most important setting of the shift linkage is making certain that this condition is met. If not, apply pressure may suffer and the trans can fail. The rest of the positions selected should fall into line. If not, your linkage is likely worn and needing new bushings or something.

Re: Transmission shifter linkage questions
Thanks for the info. That method is the one I was leaning towards but not sure if it would work or not. I will try that tomorrow and let ya know if it worked for me or not.

Re: Transmission shifter linkage questions
You mentioned an aftermarket column. The length of the lever on the column that attaches to the shift rod is what will determine the indicator position. If not the same as stock, it will not line up. If you have the resources to slot the mounting hole or extend this piece, that may be a solution. Aftermarket does not always fit exactly. Custom stuff sometimes requires modification.

Re: Transmission shifter linkage questions
Richard that was one of the questions I had. If the adjustment using the method listed above doesn't work I'll have to start measuring. I do have an old column, but it was for a three on the tree.

Re: Transmission shifter linkage questions
I got it all sorted out. I put the shifter and transmission in neutral and tightened down the bolt. Started it up and ran it through the gears and everything worked fine.
Had the rear axle on jackstands just in case it was in gear.
