Dash Wiring?

Just purchased a 80 C10 that was someone's project and noticed today that all guages work fine but when you turn on the headlights the gas guage drops to empty. Shut them off and it goes back to reading right.

I haven't had time to tear into it yet but was wondering if this was a common problem and if anyone has run into it before?

My first thought is maybe a bad ground somewhere?
