anyone strip clear off wheels?

Not sure which place to ask this question, hopefully an answer will show up here.

Many new aluminum wheel styles have a factory clear coat on them. Anyone ever strip that off to polish the wheels? If so, which chemical did you use?

I wanted to refinish a set of wheels. The shop that was going to do the work said they use a blaster with glass beads.

The abrasive used is soda bicarbonate instead of sand(silica) or glass or walnut shells or anything else you can shoot out at a hundred miles an hour using compressed air.

^What Matt Said.^

Here's the quote from Wheel Collision Center's wheel care tips:

"Never use a brake cleaner to remove grease or brake film. The solvents are too strong and will most assuredly ruin a clearcoated finish." So...if you really want the clear coat off without removing any aluminum...

Wheel collision does great aluminum wheel repair. They fixed my 15X10 8-hole Indy slot that Schwab left loose. They also strip polish and clearcoat as well.

My wife had a Grand Am and after a while the clear coat started to peel off in a couple of spots. I used "Chisel " brand gasket remover to take off the rest of the clear coat to polish the wheels. It is made by Loctite. You have to be careful. It will pit aluminum if left on too long, but it works so fast that you should never pit or discolor your wheels. Just be sure to rinse well with water after the clearcoat is off!

Pick up a can of Aircraft Stripper. I use this on wheels to remove any paint before powdercoating them.

i've always used the aresol can of gasket remover, you can usually just spray it on and then rinse the clearcoat off. take the valve stem out first and use and aluminum polish and they will really shine-joe

I used this on my polished wheels, works great. Get it at Kragen or Autozone. Buy the gallon for $20.
