taking steering wheel off
Ok I am asking a dumb question but I don't want to break anything. How do you get the steering wheel off. Mine is all cracked (whose isn't) and I want to restore it. I took the horn button off, horn assembly out and the nut off, but the wheel doesn't come off. Do I need to pry it or is there something else I am missing? Thanks for the assistance.

You need a steering wheel puller to get the wheel off if it hasn't been off in a while. They are not that expensive, under $15 at most auto parts stores. Some stores will even rent you the tool with a credit card for a deposit. Note the position of the wheel before you take it off!

there are two threaded holes in the middle of your wheel. You set the puller on there, screw two bolts into those holes and the puller rests against the steering shaft. Use a wrench or ratchet on the puller and it will slide right off.
Just remember where you wheel was on the shaft, otherwise your wheel will not be where it was, but if your wheel isn't straight when your going straight, you could turn the wheel and put it back on in a different position.

Or you can make your own with a flat piece of metal, two bolts and a couple washers. Nobody thought my homemade puller would work, but it did several times; ugly as hell but functional. I lost it though, have no idea where it is.
