My 1968 1/2 4X4 frankintruck I’m trying to get going…
I’ve had this sitting around for a couple years and no telling how long before I bought it. Since the door VIN is a CE148S150417 it’s not a factory 4X4, someone must have swapped the body? Anyway the automatic transmission shift lever (On the column) will not budge. I’ve never messed with the linkage on the column before. I think I’m going to pull steering wheel and have a look inside along with studying the linkage. I don’t mind if it’s not a factory 4X4 as long as I can get it running and moving.

Spray some penetrating oil or something similar right into the shift arm hole. Carefully work the shift arm back and forth and hopefully it will break free.

I hate to ask, but are you pulling the shifter arm toward you before trying to shift out of park?

Thanks for the input and yes I’m pulling it forward to shift. The drift pin was gone that holds the shifter in place, I put a new one in.
Finally got it in gear to move it but still not right. |

You may want to have someone take a look at the detent plate while you are trying to shift. If there is wear in the shift shaft pulling the lever forward doesn't move the shaft far enough down to clear the stop. If it is clearing then there is another issue.

Gummed up Shifter rods was the main reason that I bought a tilt unit for my truck.
After I tore the original apart, I found all the gunk, grease, and dirt that had accumulated in 50+ years. If you take the steering wheel and hub off, you can spray some cleaner on the internal parts of the shifter, and working it back and forth, you should be able to get get it freed up. This is only a temporary fix though, as all that gunk will just be softened up, and the problem will eventually return. The true fix is to disassemble the column and clean it. |
