Column shifter question

I have reinstalled the steering column. Engine and trans still out. I can't recall the position relationship of the detents and the indicator in the cab. With the indicator showing in the P position is the detent at the bottom of the column on the first position or all the way past the edge If all the way past the first step, then my indicator is way off. I suspect the linkage when attached to tranny would stop the travel so the column decent does not travel past the edge? Photo is if the detent past the edge. It was difficult to get an angle to show what i am referring to. Can someone confirm this does not happen with linkage to trannt connected?

The arm should not be off the edge of the detent plate in P. It should be touching the ridge.

To set the approximate position of the shift linkage, I loosen the nut that secures the shift rod to the column, I then put the transmission in drive and the shifter lever in D solidly against the surface labeled "D" below, and then I tighten the nut. I follow that up with confirming that I can shift between D and N without pulling back on the shift lever. If I notice any asymmetry in the ease with which it shifts into D or N, then I make minute adjustments to the rod until D and N shift equally easily without pulling back on the shift lever.

Depending on how far off everything was, you may have to adjust your neutral safety switch afterward so that the reverse lights come on at the right time.
