Not Quite Beach Weather

IT does not happen very often and my old Yankee roots laugh about it, but it actually started snowing down here. I am about a mile from the gulf. We supposed to end up with about 4 inches for the day. NOt much for my old PA folks, but last real snow here was march of 93.

Re: Not Quite Beach Weather

We have had little snow here in the Northeast. We had about 3" on Sunday night. They were expecting 10".
This morning it was -2*.

Re: Not Quite Beach Weather

We got nothin here in Iowa, just bare ground and it was -12F this morning but to me it wasn't all that bad since it wasn't windy. Meanwhile up north at my parent's place it was -30F.

Re: Not Quite Beach Weather

Like most of the nation, we've had a cold stretch of weather. Got 6'' snow a week ago and then another 2'' after the first had mostly melted away. Along with the 2'' snow got some sleet/ice first and then the snow. Temps have been just down right chilly. Mid teens daytime, last night got down to -9F, wx guesser say may reach upper 20s today. Sure glad no longer have to drive 35 miles and work the flight line any more. Next week is forecasted to be in the mid 40s. Whoohoo! Ready for that for sure.

Re: Not Quite Beach Weather

Bourbon Street in New Orleans with several inches of snow. Snowiest day in New Orleans history.
Pensacola, Florida with snow on the water's edge.
Some "snow birds" might have to look for another warm spot to hang out.

Re: Not Quite Beach Weather

We ended up with 7to 8 inches at the house. Around 9 to 10 happened in the local area. Set record this morning for 7 degrees. This is not the southern Mississippi i stayed for. Since it won't get above freezing really till tomorrow, it will be frozen a few days.

The 70 and I were wimps and stayed in the warmth of our houses yesterday, probably today also. Last big snow was 1963 down here. I grew up with it, and it looked neat yesterday. Hadn't seen snow fall like that since 1982 in Japan. Hope all my southern friends along the gulf did well in this.

Re: Not Quite Beach Weather

NO and most of the southern tier states have more snow than we do in MN. None of the local snow mobile trails are open.
So the southern states are a bit lucky IMO because the ground isn't frozen like it is around here. So that really helps melt the snow on open ground and on the highways. With a bit sunshine you will be amazed how fast it will go away. Also the moisture from the snow should soak right in instead of running off like a heavy rain.

Re: Not Quite Beach Weather

We're just on the edge of the arctic blast. It's been uncomfortably cold here.

Re: Not Quite Beach Weather

Just got this update on the Florida weather. Yikes! Unusual that Florida is colder that we are. This probably is very bad for the citrus industry.

Cold weather will remain on tap through the remainder of the work week, courtesy of a reinforcing dry cold front approaching Florida today and Friday. Another round of cold air will work its way nearly statewide with low temperatures in the upper teens and 20s continuing along the I-10 corridor, the lower to middle 20s throughout the Florida Big Bend and Suwannee River Valley, at or below freezing through the Florida I-4, and the lower to middle 30s through Central and Southwest Florida. Breezy conditions overnight will usher in wind chills that will feel several degrees colder than their actual, with temperatures feeling like the lower 20s to lower 30s as far south as Southwest Florida and Lake Okeechobee. Temperatures will feel like the middle to upper 30s along the immediate Florida Space Coast and through the Everglades.

What: A rare and historic winter storm brought all modes of winter weather, including snow, sleet, and freezing rain to the North Florida I-10 corridor. Primarily wet snow fell west of the Ochlockonee River Basin along the Florida Panhandle (including the immediate Gulf Coast and beaches!) Preliminary snowfall totals of 3-5" were reported to the National Weather Service, with the heaviest snowfall occurring along and west of US-231 where 5-7" of snow was measured. Not only were single-day and event snowfall records broken for many Florida Panhandle locations, but the state snowfall record was also broken with this system as 8-9” of snowfall was recorded in Milton, Florida (Santa Rosa County). This more than doubles the 4“ state record set in 1954! Along and east of the Capital City region, a mixture of snow and sleet fell through much of the event with wintry precipitation continuing through the Suwannee River Valley and into Northeast Florida. Wet areas that do not fully melt and evaporate off the ground will likely re-freeze and yield hazardous, icy driving conditions once again tonight into Friday morning especially over bridges, overpasses, and on elevated roadways. Dangerously cold temperatures continue through the work week, with temperatures falling well below normal nearly Peninsula-wide by this weekend.
