Carb issue

I've been having problems with my rochestor bc carb. Took it out during cold weather and it started right up but when I went to restart it when it was warmed up it wouldnt start. The choke was still closed . I propped the choke open with a screwdriver and it started. Turned out the stovepipe was clogged with soot and crude. Cleaned it out and it works as its supposed to now. Now my problem is once the choke opens it doesnt kick down and the motor is racing. I rebuilt the motor and just put the old carb back on. Do you think the past owner didnt realize the choke wasnt opening and just turned the mixture screw and idle to make it run? I'm laid up right now with afib and cant get out there to test this

Re: Carb issue

I would try a little WD on the linkage first and see if that doesn't free it up.

Re: Carb issue

check for vacuum leaks
make sure the throttle closes all the way
see if the idle cam rolls back when the choke spring is hot
move the idle cam with your finger and force the throttle screw up against it, see if it idles
go through the procedure to set the choke when cold

once your sure the above are all right see if you can bring down the idle with mixture screw
if you can't try backing off the timing a touch and try again

once it idles down, check the timing

Might need to rebuild that carb if all else fails
there are pretty good descriptions of the BC and how it works online.

FWIW, a cheap no-name rochester monojet clone off amazon runs pretty good on my 250, they sell BC clones too.

Re: Carb issue

check your intake maifold bolts and carb mounting bolts to ensure they are all tight. high idle is sometimes a lean mixture's fault
check all the carb linkage to ensure it is free moving, including the acell pedal linkage and then look to see if the cam for the choke is still in the high idle position when it is warmed up
