new starter.. no ingauge,,,
ok I put a new starter in again. 2nd one is about 3 months. Ran fine for 2 days and now the when I go to start the truck the starter just spins. This starter is 2 days old. And I know it works. I have inspected the fly wheel and the teeth are all nice and sharp not ground down. No missing sections or bad spots etc.. I am thinking that maybe the fly wheel is kinda tiliting after a few cranks of the engine. What parts are in there that could possibly make this happen? I am tired of messing with the starters. I want to fix this once and for all. I cannot stand to see my baby sit.
plz help if you can Rich

starter problems
I had a similar problem on a k5. The flexplate cracked so it was bent away from the starter. The starter was engaging but couldn't reach the bent flexplate. (auto tranny).. Changed flexplate. Tadah!
Other possibility is if it's shimmed to much. It's not reaching the flywheel. Just a shot in the dark. |

Well when I pulled the old starter it had no shims. the new starters came with them but I never put them in because the 1st one did not have them in.

Did you change the seleniod also?? It may not be engaging the starter and the starter is just spinning. just a thought.

sounds like a bad selenoid. just because the starter is new doesnt mean its any good believe me. i have sold parts in the past and am a mechanic i get bad parts outta the box every day its not uncommon. there is only a 1 in 3 chance of getting a good starter or alternator out of the box. kinda sad but theres nothing you can do but pull the starter off and make em swap ya for another one. i went through 6 starters in one day one time every damn one of em was bad out of the box

dam that is horrible odds. lol. I am pretty sure the starter celnoid is ok. but I will check. What it is doing, atleast after me and my boss where talking about it.. was that the truck was turning over fine and then it grinded pretty hard and then just sat there spinning. We where possibly thinking that the Flywheel has some how come loose or something. cause if I pull the starter and put it back in again it will grab and start fine. ( I have not tried this yet but I am sure it will work) Is it hard to replace a flywheel or flexplate?
what does it entale? Rich :edit: proper wording ( it still sucks but now it is readable )

Make sure you have the bracket the goes from the aft end of the starter to the engine block, they usually don't make it back on after the first starter change so you may have to hunt for one. Try it it does wonders. Also, have someone turn the key so you can look at it while it is engaging to see if it is moving. check your bolts to make sure they are starter bolts, they have that special knurling that does something magical, but plain bolts just don't work, they slip around and allow the starter to move. The parts house should have those.

test the starter
backyard works....like duct tape..I would check the starter when it is out of the truck. A set of cables, ground it out, check with the solenoid and see if it engages or not. If not, then you've found the problem. If it does, it can possibly be some connection with the wiring on the solenoid.

Cableguy is right about starters... I had one that the solenoid went out about 4 days after installing it.
Walker is onto something too... I've seen that bracket in drawings, but have never seen one in person. I'll be looking for one for myself!

pulled starter today and tested it. was fine. I installed it and it would turn engine over but still made a grinding noise. I found out after inspecting with my trusty flashlight that the starter gear and flywheel where sticking together. I add a shim and she is turning over like a champ! thx guys for the help
