Rear Axel Casting Numbers
I was just reading in an exchange manual that rear axels from our trucks have a casting number that includes codes for the gear ratio. Does anybody know where I can get a chart that lists the casting numbers and their specs?
Another question - which 67-87 trucks came with a 3.73 rear end?

'76 Sierra Grande (Orange) - hate isn't too strong a word. Kid who bought it turned it into a hot rod. '68 C-10 R.I.P. - Dad's old truck...too far gone to resurrect. '59 C-50 - with hoist. I do not know were you can get a book to see what the numbers mean but they should be located on the passenger side axle at the top. You may have to clean the area to see them. Once you have them post them up here someone around here has to have the book to decode them.

I've found all kinds of engine casting number charts on-line. I guess I was hoping that someone knew about a similar on-line source for rear axel data.
If I'm going to the wrecker in winter, I'd just as soon know which truck models/years to look at rather than digging in the snow. Thanks for the suggestion.

JHickson6 - I'm from Gretna which is about an hour south on the US border.
According to the Chevrolet Trucks Parts Interchange Manual by Paul Herd...on C-10 trucks the code islocated 3-5 inches outboard of the carrier on the front of the right-hand axle tube. I've spent too much time under that truck, but I've never bothered looking for the casting#. And with the temperature being minus flipping ridiculous...I'm not about to check until spring!
