Replacing starter gear?
How difficult is it to put a new gear on a starter ? My flywheel is shot so I am replacing it, I also want to replace the gear on the starter cause I'm sure it's trashed as well.

I think starters are too cheap to bother... IMHO I just replaced mine and at $35 it was too quick to bother taking the old one apart.

Just ask for a starter bendix for your model starter.

the bendix is probably going to cost 15 bucks not to mention at least 30 bucks in aggrevation fighting the starter. you can get another one for 30 or 35 bucks. not to be a jerk but heres whats going to happen i would almost bet on it. in about two weeks after you have the new bendix in the starter your starter is going to quit working. it always happens this way

Just did that last weekend. Took one from a bad motor to fix one with a bad bendix. Pull off the solenoid, remove the two long screws and pull the nose off. There is a washer that slides off then a little cup sorta thing that goes over a snap ring. Tap the cup thingy towards the brush end of the motor, this exposes the snap ring. It is just a round wire that you have to finess off with a screwdriver, it's not a snapring with the eyelets so it is a little more difficult to get off. I think I expanded it a little with a pair of needle nose pliers. R and R the bendix and reverse the procedure. You may also consider looking at the brushes while you are in there.
All in all it was worth it. I now have a starter that cranks good, has new brushes and is as good or better that and cheapie rebuilt one. It cost me nothing and "a penny saved..."

Thanks Walker-- I've had all the $40 starters i can stand. This one really cranks , is under a year old and the headers have not fried it. It's just that I want a new starter gear with my new flywheel.

Replace the Bendix, it's easy and cheap enough. Just don't get one from Autozone, they are junk.

i agree with those who say get a new starter a NEW starter its waaay easier to just change out besides youre set for a while that way if you replace just the wheel you never know when the rest of the starter will crap out

replacement of the bendix is easy, just be sure & ask for the heavy duty one - its my understanding that BB starters got bendis's with 5 clutches inside instead of 4 (less slippage is good!)

One more thing to think about? Make sure your replacement bendix gear has the correct amount of teeth to mesh with your flywheel. Itsa b*tch to get it back together and find out they're not compatible. Good luck.

Get a new snap-ring for the starter drive. They are easy to bend when removing them, & sometimes they don't want to bend back to shape. Might look into new bushings & brushes while you've got it apart, too.
