Steering gearbox loud Click

Hi all, 1969 C10
Installed a re-manufactured gearbox (all new tie rods, ball joints etc).
Using CPP 2.5” drop spindles/ disc brakes.
Just installed the column & half shaft, oil added to the pump.
Not running the engine yet.
Turning left, no issues (about 2 turns)
Turning right, there is a loud click at about 1turn (wheel feels like something is binding but will turn).
Noise seems to be from the gearbox.

I have not run the gearbox with pump pressure yet.

Thank you!

Re: Steering gearbox loud Click

You can prime and run the pump with a socket, and drill. Make sure you spin it the correct direction. Things may settle into place with fluid pressure.

Right, never thought to do that, dang.
Pump is all bolted up, belt etc on.
I’m finishing up the wiring, then I can start er up for pressure.

Thanks!

Still a good idea if you have room. One less leak point to deal with on start up. Especially if you added hydro boost. I really struggled to get the AN adapters to seat. The amount of needed torque was way high to finally seal. I actually took the position of, it going to strip the threads on the pump or seal. Thankfully it sealed.

Re: Steering gearbox loud Click

I've never understood the utility of the AN flare. Yes, I know that they are used on aircraft and spacecraft, so maybe it's just a production time-saving choice? Though when I worked on spacecraft, it was at best one every few years, and single- or double- flare time couldn't have possibly figured into it. I think that they are used on spacecraft only because they were developed and worked on by people who developed and worked on aircraft.

Took your advice, removed the belt, got a socket, spun the pump.
Had to spin it fairly fast until it finally primed. Had the wife at the wheel turning
lock to lock. Dang click is still there.

Discovered a leak too. I have two 45’s and a self-made pressure hose, I’m a bit paranoid lol. Had to use some muscle on those fittings, leak stopped for now.

But that click.
