Fender repair in the UK. 3 part Video

Only have videos as I cannot upload photos directly.

My photobucket I actually gave up on.

So we are now at the point it gets interesting. Well, for all those who look but never make the effort to comment or interact. Thanks to those who do though.

The fenders have two aspects.

Front and Rear.

Rust repair, using Taiwanese stamped panels is probably the easiest way for me as good replacement parts are unobtainable. Or would be eye wateringly expensive.

It is a two part job. Repair or replace part of the rear mounting brace so as to have a reference point. Using reference marks and measurements.
Once that is cut out, spot welds drilled out and the replacement cut and shaped to size, you tack weld the brace in place.
Check measurements again and again. Adjust if needed.

Then you’ll flip over, decide what size patch is needed. Measure, mark, cut, pray, weld, grind etc……

You also need to do a load of dint repairs, hammer and dollie work and literally spend hours chasing dents and straightening out the panel, filling old holes etc

Stuff you don’t see in photos

And that concluded day one of many on these fenders

I would say patience and resilience are needed as it’s really easy to become resentful or bored, pissed off at this job

My new cordless grinder arrived as well as I was preparing the fender

The video here is one of three just on the wings

This is work to test ones patience. I have spent weeks perfecting metal that no one will ever see (e.g., where the door frame joins the cab floor by the inner rocker but behind the outer rocker). The only thing I can do other than offer up a plaintive prayer on your behalf is to suggest starting at sections of the fender where misalignment will be most noticeable (e.g., where body lines are continued or where they join other panels). I have coated every inch of metal I have replaced that cannot be easily seen with about 8 layers of POR15 in the hopes of never having to do this again on this truck!

Good luck!

Thank you Scott

Yes it does.

However……….

Bad luck comes in threes, Right ??

My favourite lodger moved out yesterday.

Last night ended up with a major setback in the garage at closing time.

More about this later if anyone is interested.

Wish I could ignore this.

Actually…….. Here it is.

Dropped my door after primer for blocking or paint.
Was carrying it like a tray.
Damaged it badly
No access to top or middle dents.
They are not dents, they are crumples.
Tore rear folded seam open too.

I knew this could happen.

Absolutely gutted.

Now I need to pull the dents and start fixing that.

Oh no!!!! Isn't that how it goes some times... As I tell my children, "surely this is a world of suffering!" Here's hoping that something great comes from a seeming disaster! Let me know if you need anything state side!

Thank you.

I see it as an extra day working on the build and door. But also learning a new skill.

A friend who helped me build my “Rezin Rockit” (Google it) has a spot welder he is dropping off tomorrow afternoon.

New skill coming soon.

I have not yet made it to Omaha, drove right by it on the way to Iowa.

Had dinner in Nebraska too.

Drove 400 miles from near St Louis to meet two guys for dinner then turned around and drove back toward Kansas city.

I come over every year forva road trip

Some of it further back on my YouTube channel

Re: Fender repair in the UK. 3 part Video

Right…….

Saturday morning

A good time to post up the next part of episode 24. Part 3 of fixing the second terrible fender.

WANT TO SEE THE CONCLUSION OF MY EPIC CHALLENGE?

https://youtu.be/DFatrh51pg0?si=Dtr53OruVCdnNWtF

So that concludes one of those jobs I always thought was crazy to even try.

But others have done it before.

Feedback?

Re: Fender repair in the UK. 3 part Video

So I dropped my door in primer.

CRISIS !!!

So I had to fix that.

I made up a special tool after thinking a lot about what had happened.

Video will show the process.

This was probably the most technical repair I’ve done yet.

Happy with the result.
