Have fun! Gotta love taking road trips in these trucks (except for the darn gas bill).

See you got some new wheels too since the last time you posted pics

Sweet, good luck on your travels.

I'd want a 5 or 6 speed before I'd go that far.

This is Bumpster, Shuttermutt's dad. I am new to this board, but I have been lurking around for awhile. Seem's like a very friendly and helpfull bunch of guy's. Not trying to steal shuttermutts thread, but he asked me to tell you he made 600 plus miles today with little trouble, gas mileage is 10 to 11, I really got to hear about that cause I put a 700r4 in my 72, and am getting 16 +-. He is in Oneonta NY. Said shifter is not going into low or second, and barely into drive. I suspect they popped linkage out of socket when they raised engine to install new pan. He also put a new gas cap on, [something about a cab full of fumes]. He hopes to make Minn. monday late.

He is heading here to MN for a job in the twin cities. Picking up and moving the family.

Have a safe trip! Keep us posted on the journey, dad!

Look forward to looking him up once he's settled.

Trip update. Talked to my daughter-in-law, he was in Ohio and was looking to make somewhere in Indiana before stopping for the night. Don't know much else, but i assume no news is good news. If anything was wrong, I would be the last to find out unless the truck was crispy or the cuffs were on. He's pretty independant (or stubborn), that way. I don't envy him that drive ; unless I can set the cruise and fire up some tunes, I'm only good for 3 or 400 miles a day unless I'm on the bike. Thanks for asking, I'm sure he will be itching to tell all once he is settled in Eden Prairie area. Bumpy

I am sure we all look forward to the final report. Keep us informed as I'm sure he won't be setup with his computer any time soon. By the way I wonder who he inherited that stubbornessfrom.

Over 1,700 miles, 36 hours, hundreds of gallons of gas, and countless bottles of Yoohoo later, I'm sitting in my office in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The truck did incredibly well. The grand total on-the-road repair cost is $24.00...

Gas Cap: $12.00 (somewhere in Mass.)
It turns out that sucking gasoline fumes for hundreds of miles can give you a headache. Fortunately, the new cap seems to have fixed the problem.

Lift Time: $12.00 (somewhere in Wisconsin)
As bumpster reported, I was having a hard time getting the truck to go into drive starting just outside New York. It turns out that my exhaust nuts were working their way loose. I'd lost a nut on the driver's side and was about to lose the other two. The passenger side wasn't much better. Luckily, I found a little shop that let me throw the truck up on the lift for a few minutes and tighten them down. Funny, the truck got a LOT quieter!

The entire trip I only saw two other 67-72 trucks. One was a green 1970 (?) with a camper shell on the tollway going towards Gary, Indiana. The other was a 70 or 71 sitting next to a house in Wisconsin. It's a little strange cruising down the interstate for hours on end and ALWAYS being the oldest vehicle on the road.
