Fuel pump for bed/frame mounted fuel tanks?

We put a frame/bed moutned fuel tank in the '70 C10.

The truck use to fire right up as soon as you turned they key...but now it seems to take a bit for fuel to make fire. Do people typically replace the mechanical fuel pump with an electric pump of some kind to overcome this or just live with it like that? I'd rather stick with a mechanical pump than go electric.

Would a small inline electric pump just for starting work better than just cranking until the mechanical does it's job?

I went through this thought process when I relocated my tank to the rear. Still being carbureted, I didn't "need" an electric fuel pump but was considering it. Was concerned about pulling fuel that distance and an older gentlemen reminded me on all the old cars they had tanks in the rear and mechanical pumps. Thus far no problems with mine.

I have a square body suburban tank and still using factory fuel pump. Starts thesame as when it had factory tank. I ran 3/8" hard fuel line up to the input to fuel pump.

What about adding a backflow preventer valve? Keeps fuel from running back to tank.

That is what the little rubber piece is on the Quadrajet fuel filter. A check valve to keep the fuel from being drained out of the fuel bowls on the carb.

OK thanks I didn't know that. Could it be bad?

If I drive the 68 every day or so it fires right up. Once it sits for a week or two it takes a couple pump pump grinds before it'll light off.
I figure the starter "priming" the fuel & oil supply won't hurt.

Of course, it is just rubber. Do not think design is 100% seal. Maybe why more cranking when not driven for longer periods. Another thing is not sure if other carbs integrate a check valve into the design. Think they would, but I cannot confirm or deny what other carbs do.

Edit- Here is a filter with check valve https://quadrajetparts.com/short-pap...alve-p-79.html
Can remember getting filters from local parts place without them.
