489 Roller BBC and TH400
I'm helping my brother sell the BBC he has had in his Wagon. It is located in Front Royal, VA, but I can arrange meeting up in the DMV area. Below is his description and some pictures, plenty more pictures available, oil pan is off to allow the buyer to inspect the bearings for themselves. Also have a video of it running prior to being pulled out.
For sale is my 489 BBC / TH400 combo. The engine has approximately 16,000 miles on it. The TH400 was rebuilt last year by Wayne at Rogers Transmission in Chantilly VA. I built this motor 15 years ago and installed it in my G-body wagon as a street/strip car. I forget the times exactly, but the best was about 11.20 @ 125 with poorly tuned suspension and a slipping transmission. I never ran it down the track after the transmission was rebuilt. Wagon weighed around 3700 pounds. The only reason for pulling was to install an LS/4L80 combo. I realized I like driving it more than racing it, and having a 4th gear was a big help. Cold idle it will sit at 70 PSI oil pressure Warmed up it will sit at about 35 PSI Sale includes: Mark IV Iron BBC. 4 bolt main. Bored 0.030” with a 4.25” stroke. Ported Oval iron cylinder heads, # 3999241. Heads were cut for a 2.150” intake valve and a 1.880” exhaust valve Forged rotating assembly: Steel crank, forged pistons, H-beam rods, file and fit rings. High volume oil pump Windage tray Stock stamped steel oil pan- 6 qt capacity, passenger side dipstick, bolted down with ARP hardware. Bottom end is studded with ARP stud kit. Rods have ARP hardware Oil pan has ARP hardware Cylinder Heads have ARP stud kit Valvetrain: Hydraulic roller cam. Intake Duration at 0.050” 248* Exhaust duration at 0.050” 256* Intake lift: 0.632” Exhaust lift: 0.648” Lobe separation 112* Comp Cams Ultra Pro Magnum XD roller rockers. Part # 1820. Ratio: 1.70. 7/16” stud. Comp Cams retro-fit hydraulic roller lifters. Part # 85401-16 Fel-Pro gaskets throughout the engine. Cast aluminum valve covers. I think from a Gen 5 engine. They use an O-ring to seal instead of a flat gasket, and have been great. No interference with valvetrain. Holley 4150 series 950 HP double pumper carb, with pictured AN fuel line, gauge, throttle return spring set up and transmission kickdown switch set up. Edelbrock RPM Air Gap intake #7561. Bolted down with ARP hardware -8AN coolant lines in the intake connect the rear cylinders to the front to allow better circulation of coolant. An Edelbrock mechanical fuel pump and a Russel inline stainless steel mesh filter were installed, only took it off because it was full of fuel and stinking up my garage. Fuel pump push rod is still in the engine. Fuel pump was fed with a ½” supply line. Mini starter SFI flex plate PB harmonic balancer with Moroso timing pointer. TDC was verified using a dial indicator before the cylinder head was installed. Aerospace Components Electric Water Pump. Rated for continuous use, used it for thousands of street miles, never had an issue, always kept me at 180* cruising down the highway, never higher than 190* sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic during the summer. Aerospace Components Vacuum Pump. I never actually hooked this up, but I have all the fittings you would need, just never got around to having someone weld some fittings into a set of valve covers. The pump has always had the AN caps on it to keep dirt out of the ports. I have a set of new-in-the-box fabricated aluminum valve covers that go with the engine, all the necessary AN fittings are included also. The hub on the front of the balancer is to run the vacuum pump and alternator. I frame-mounted my alternator, so no engine mount, but the alternator is included with the engine. It is a 1 wire alternator and worked perfectly fine. 14.3 volts all day long, battery was in the back. MSD pro-billet distributor. Part # 85551 MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor plug wires AC Delco R44T spark plugs. Plugs are indexed for each cylinder. I have a bunch of extra plugs that have been labeled and go with the engine. Auto Meter Pro Shift Lite with several different RPM pills included. I shifted this thing at 7000+ RPM and it was happy about it. MSD 6AL-2 programmable ignition box 14x3 K&N air filter with breath through top sitting on a drop base all included. I have a bunch of extra stuff like oil filters, carb gaskets, jet kit, spark plugs, cap and rotor ect that come with the engine too. Whatever small stuff I find between now and when you pick it up I’ll throw in. ***Engine stand is NOT included*** If you are doing a G-body swap, I have the Hooker swap headers. We can discuss if you need those too. Transmission: Th400 built by Rogers Automotive in Chantilly. Shift kit, valve body work, new steels and clutches, forward pattern valve body. clean bill of health. Has a fitting the pan for a temp sensor. Torque Converter: I had a custom converter built for the engine set up. It is a 9” weld-together race converter built by Neal Chance Racing Converters. It foot brakes to 2400 RPM. Flashes 4200. This converter was built specifically for my setup up and it did exactly what they said it would. I would like to sell the engine and transmission together since the transmission was built around the engine, but will separate if necessary. I don’t know how to price a used engine and transmission, so I am starting at $7,500 OBO for everything. Cash only. I need to clear up the space in my garage. Located in the town of Front Royal. Zip code 22630. Sitting in a climate-controlled garage. I just drained all the fluids out of the engine this weekend to take pictures.
