The LAST 1970 C10

I picked this up yesterday and made a new sub-folder in my pictures folder titled The LAST 1970 C10. The cab and clip on this truck are about the best I have ever come across. It has had some partial floor and inner rocker/front cab mount repair done to it way in the past, before it got out of hand and is nicely done from what I can see from the underside. Typical 350/TH400 with both MIA.
Not starting a thread in the restoration forum just yet, as I have 4 other projects I'm currently buried in. 2 of those are for my bodyman to repay for all his time spent on my Camaro, so far.

I've been saying it for past several years, but I am going to work hard at sticking to it. I have more projects than I can complete before my expiration date as it is.

Re: The LAST 1970 C10

When I pulled it up on my trailer, the left rear tire never even hinted at turning. I managed to get the drum off yesterday, but had to pry it far enough to get a pry bar in the axle hole to beat the shoes out. The hold down pins survived, but they pulled thru the caps. Luckily, I had more in my spare parts to put them back in place along with a good adjuster assembly at the bottom, as that appeared to have been rusted long enough to become 1 piece. I didn't want to just leave the shoes out, in case I press the brake pedal and then blow the wheel cylinder out. While that wheel was off, I got a really good look at the underside and it is worse than my initial look-see while it was in the weeds. The box is basically trash, as all the cross members are severely rusted from sitting in a field for 20 years. I didn't intend to keep it, as it is a steel floor and I have a nice wood floor box I will use, but, dang, I was hoping I could sell it for a few hundred and get some return funds.
And, as good as MOST of the cab is, the rear mount structure is mostly gone at the mounts too. The left rear cab to box alignment has the typical misalignment from this issue and I didn't notice it at the time I bought the truck, but I still would have bought it for the price I paid. Just more work than anticipated or wanted. STILL way better than most up here that need a complete floor and A pillars to hold the doors on.
Speaking of doors, the left one is a replacement with the CST panel. The right door is original but I can't get it open. The latch wheel must be rusted in place and I'll need to get the seat out to access removal of the panel to start soaking it. I, also, need to get the door lock out an have Leon make up a key to, hopefully, fit the ignition lock. It is just strange how I keep getting these trucks that the key didn't stay with it...
I did get a clean ND title from 1996 and the last sticker on the plate looks like 2002, so it has sat a long time and rust never sleeps, especially in a field.
I don't anticipate much of anything happening for the foreseeable future, while I work on getting my Camaro into the final stage for paint.
Also, need to find 4 roller wheels/tires to put on the '67 now to sell it. I was going to sell it a year ago, but couldn't find the title. I found that a few months back, so I'm good to go now.

Re: The LAST 1970 C10

When I bought the 68 stepside in my thread ALL 4 wheels were locked up. I spent a couple hours in the weeds, chiggers, and hot sun beating and cussing and finally got the old brake shoes pulled out. Trucks are fun!

Good luck, Rg

Re: The LAST 1970 C10

Sold the '67 last week and made the final decision to use the '69 for donor parts, so I'm past all that uncertainty.
I did manage to pry the right door open and it is badly rusted at the bottom. Thankfully, the right door on the '69 is quite nice.
I pulled the front clip off the '69 last weekend and was quite surprised and pleased at the condition of the fenders and core support. I need the support for the '70 and possibly the right fender.
I was under the '69 the other day and was looking at what it will take to remove the box bolts and was stunned to see they were already gone... I didn't know this when I towed it 750 miles home last March, the last 180 miles in a blizzard.... There was nothing holding that box on the frame, other than it's own weight and I was hit by 60 mph side winds on the freeway in northern IA and southern MN.... I may start to believe in miracles.
The box on the '69 is, also, very nice and I will swap that onto this truck for now, to prevent it from sitting somewhere around here in the way.
As for no key to this truck, I removed the right door lock but there is no code stamped on it and I have a set of matched locks from Doc, so I drilled the ignition tumbler out and put the "new" set on the truck.
