Fender and Door Seam Sealer

Hi Folks, I'm getting close to painting my doors and fenders. I replaced the door skins and everything else was sand blasted so I've lost all my references. Did the factory apply seam sealer on the fender to rear brace fold area? What about where the door skin meets the window post? Any original example pictures would be appreciated.

Hoe someone chimes in. I do not thing it was sealed from mine but should be and damn sure needs to to keep water out. Looking at doors it is almost like they designed them to get water and rust out. If so they did good job.

Re: Fender and Door Seam Sealer

I don't see any seam sealer in either of those areas.

Remember that the doors aren't designed to keep all of the water out of them, they have drain holes in the bottom to allow any water that gets around the window to door seal to drain out. Doors on modern cars can be the same way; I had to clean out the drain holes in my parent's 2021 F150 because water was sloshing around in the doors after a car wash.

Re: Fender and Door Seam Sealer

Thanks for info. It still seems like if can keep it out it is better than trusting drain holes. Got to be a way to seal it up better than factory did.

Re: Fender and Door Seam Sealer

I have no pics handy but on one of my trucks they did a pretty ugly weld in that spot. I'd try seam sealer myself.

Re: Fender and Door Seam Sealer

Water will still run down the class into the door, absolutely no way to keep it out. That is why there are drain holes.

Re: Fender and Door Seam Sealer

I have seen several fenders with seam sealer in the area shown in the picture. However, I have not seen a door with seam sealer in the area shown in the picture.
