American Autowire engine harness coil wire question
Afternoon, all
Been working on replacing the engine harness in my 1970 C20 with the 350 and 4 speed manual. See my other post if you want a laugh about some interesting wiring. Anyways, I ordered a reproduction engine harness from American Autowire, p/n#20795 (https://americanautowire.com/collect...-harness-20795) I started unhooking my old harness, and I am making sure that I wire in the coil and points and that little extra diode thingy that I think cuts down on electrical noise for the AM radio? The p/o cut and spliced the black ground wire that runs from the neg coil side to the condenser in the distributor, plus the signal dampener also runs to the neg post. Yellow coil wire from the harness runs to the pos side of the coil. Ok, cool. However, the new harness does not seem to have the braided resistor wire crimped into the yellow wire connector. I specifically made sure I ordered the non-HEI version of the V8 manual trans harness. If you look at the photo for the non-HEI harness they offer for the 396ci engine, you can see the yellow and the braided gray wire twined together. Now, obvs website photos aren't always accurate, but other than this, the harness I ordered is an exact fit for my old one, with all correct leads. https://americanautowire.com/collect...-harness-31520 I'll be calling on Monday to try and sort this out, but in the meantime, anyone have any suggestions? Did I mess up? See photos below to compare my old harness and the new one: New connection at firewall ![]() ![]() New coil wire, sans resistor? ![]() Old firewall connection ![]() ![]() Thanks for any help, friends. Have a blessed Saturday.

I am making sure that I wire in the coil and points and that little extra diode thingy that I think cuts down on electrical noise for the AM radio? No diode thingy ? I assume you mean the suppression Capacitor ? The p/o cut and spliced the black ground wire that runs from the neg coil side to the points/condenser in the distributor, -NOT A GROUND WIRE- Called a Distributor Lead Wire plus the signal dampener also runs to the neg post. Suppression capacitor is on Pos post. Yellow coil wire from the harness runs to the pos side of the coil. There is so much GOOP it's hard to tell, but it looks like a Pink wire coming out of the Engine Harness connector from the location of the original cloth resistance wire. I don't think what they have in their photo is exactly the way GM did it in most cases either, but electrically they should still be the same. With an Ohm meter you should measure 1.6 Ohms from the harness connector to the coil connector. From the coil connector to the solenoid connector should read 0 Ohms.

Re: American Autowire engine harness coil wire question
Excellent info, thank you for the reply, Richard. I’m not always 100% on terms for some things, so I appreciate the corrections.
That silicone gasket sealer is what AAW recommends to help keep water out of the firewall connections. I’ll get it hooked up and start checking things with my multimeter.

Check it right the way it is.
