Transmission stays in neutral.

Turbo 400, 350 engine
When I start the truck up and put the transmission into D and give it gas, its like the transmission is still in N or P. If I leave it in D, it'll eventually start moving after like 5 minutes or so. As I'm driving, the transmission seems to slip than grab the gear and the engine belt will chirp and feel a slight kick. And this will happen almost non stop. Transmission fluid is full.
When I put the transmission in P than switch back to D, problem starts all over again.
Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: Transmission stays in neutral.

It sounds like your transmission pump is failing.

Re: Transmission stays in neutral.

The filter has dropped out of the pump....drop pan and check,,,,should have a stepped bolt in VB trhu filter to hold it in location.

Also, check VB manual valve linkage is installed correctly.

Has anyone worked on trans recently?

Cool. I didn't think about the trans pump. Something to look into. Thanks.

Few things here: What's a stepped bolt? A VB? And VB manual valve linkage?
No one had worked on the trans since I bought it about 3 years ago.
Thanks again.

Re: Transmission stays in neutral.

Thanks all for the replies. Looks like I'm going to have to drop the pan. Now I have no gear.
I'll check for that bolt, valve body, and filter.
