Arcing to ground when plug wire pulled

I have a 79 350 in this truck and when I pull the #5 wire it pops to ground somewhere back at the distributor. Would it be possible that it is jumping to the firewall which is quite close? I regret not putting this engine in the forward position when I installed it a few years ago. Maybe I'll start by sliding in a piece of plastic from a milk jug behind the distributor.
