1966 Suburban Saginaw shifter keeps popping out

I’m working on my friends 1966 suburban and the shifter keeps coming up and out of the transmission, anybody know of a retaining clip kit of some sort?there is a spring and a cap that is loose on top of it. My Google skills have gone down the drain

Pretty sure that collar you're holding, needs to be pushed down and turned. One direction or the other to " lock " it down, iirc

-push down on the collar and rotate it counter clockwise, collar will pop up then pull stick up and out.

There should be two pins inside the shifter tower that the cap hooks onto. Are yours missing?

Ok thanks for the replies guys. Upon further inspection it looks like the two hooks on the cap are basically non existent. Idk if I can buy another one but maybe I’ll just drill this cap out a little bit to make some new hooks.

Looks like somebody did a little welding on the cap before too.
